Guys,

Struggling with making a credible overdrive for guitar. Maybe losing my grip, but everything sounds way too artificial. S-Gear cool. HeadCase cool. Amplitube cool. Peavey and THD cool. Guitar Rig got some cool stuff.

As much as I hate to love Waves for anything, the ancient GTR-3 is really delivering.

Any opinions for light and responsive overdrive that is better?

The only advice I can give is I tend to use sims like I use the REAL amps. I veer away from using any distortion or overdrive pedals in the sims. I crank the amp sim up so the amp is responding to my touch. I always have found that placing a pedal sim in front of the amp in the chain tends to be muddy and the amp does not respond the same. I use Amplitube, Guitar Rig, TH2(full version), Mark Studio 4 Bass, and Audiffex GK Amplification when I use sims.
I have a room full of amps but they have not been used in a long, long time. Sims have made my life much easier. And I can't forget my trusty POD HD500!

It is so good to see someone else appreciate the J-Station. With very little tweaking, this dual processor amp sim hits way above it's ranking. I bought a new one years ago and it's never failed. The ancient software still works flawlessly on Win 10. I also bought a backup unit. You can still find them under $100 - even lower at times on ebay.

Thanks for these thoughts.
POD farm platinum has gotten full of glitches somewhere along the win 10 update sneak attacks. Having to go back through the software hoard to come up with a good replacement.

Do you dislike the sounds you hear from others using the software or the sounds you get from the software? If you dislike others clips you hear of the software you should perhaps try hardware. If it's just you, try putting a buffer, or transparent overdrive infront of your interface. Some interfaces don't sound good when a gtr is plugged in directly. Also adjust the input gain on your interface to make sure the amp sim is getting the right levels.

Appreciate Tom and Chandler...

Have the Studio Devil pro rig. A bit harsh, but some good sounds. Got in trouble with the name awhile back. Was asked to do some tracks for a christian musician and his band. Good hell bound, meat eating, brimstone snortin' heathens. Track was good until the guy asked what plugs were used to produce "such an exquisite sound". As soon as the name was revealed, the sounds were not so exquisite anymore. I got fired from the project for bringing satan into the midst of the holy inner sanctum.

Trying to evolve my understanding, and yes, going more toward a hybrid of hardware going into the computer. Was paranoid about the input not being changeable, but coming to realize that if it goes in good, don't need to second guess or change anything later.
