Glyn Barnes
I have just started looking at this thread. I would love some modular hardware and have built many a fantasy system from http://www.synthesizers.com/  and others but I don't have the space even for a modest system (and I don't have the funds for an extensive system.)

VSTi to the rescue. I have XILS 4 which takes me back to my first encounters with synthesizers, I had access to a EMS synthi A suitcase model back in the 70's and it was there I learned to understand and love analogue synthesis. How authentic XILS 4 sounds I can't say after all these years but it is more stable and does not exhibit the tuning issues  that made the original more of an effects synth than a keyboard synth. Also as it emulates two EMS synths linked together it is sonically far more versatile.

My favourite at the moment is Softubes Modular VSTi. This is a virtual Eurorack made in conjunction with Doepher with an expanding range of modules from Doepher, Inteligel and Rolli along with a range of Softube utility modules. The great thing is you can have as many or as few modules loaded as you want, no need to clutter the GIU with unused modules and if you want 8 VCOs, no problem.

To my shame I have never got my head around Reaktor, I keep on meaning to try to create some ensembles but it never happens.

I should also post this in case you aren't already familiar:

Indeed, yes, I have set up a place there too:-

Um, it should be pointed out that you're missing something at the bottom right...

The problem is that once that hole is filled, the forces of darkness will fight with your bank account and credit cards for a new hole to appear.

Blimey...

I never thought I'd be doing this, and I had even bought Reaktor 6 last month, just to "dabble" with modular synthesis.
...
Lots to do now... And if I thought GAS was a problem before..............

I have always thought that what happened with the early "Krautrock" stuff, is not over and folks could still learn from it, and make more use of it. The only concern I have is folks taking the "sound" they find and like, and immediately turn it into a "song", instead of just fooling around with it and having fun left and right and end it when it does, regardless of any kind of format, which makes the sounds, way more attractive and versatile.

To me, the best Tangerine Dream, for example, was the one that was not "controllable" because of these machines and being able to set them up again the same way, in their early days in concert, which became the reason why their bootlegs were so valuable then ... everything was different! AND, way more fun to hear and enjoy!

Your other half?

I'm a bloke and my "other half" is my good lady, so to speak

Of some thirty odd years, which is quite amazing considering what an a-hole I am sometimes...

So half-wife.  I've always called lovers my half husbands.

VSTi to the rescue.

Indeed Glyn, and I was already going down the VSTi route, having recently purchased the two Arturia modular offerings and more recently Reaktor 6, which is actually not as difficult as 5, I am led to believe, since they have now introduced Blocks.

The Softube Eurorack modular VSTi looks great, but now that I've gone down the hardware route, it is unlikely that I'll invest in that. For now at least. In fact I'm pretty sure that all of my music budget will go on hardware now

cheers

That is, indeed, a problem

Could be on a second case before you know it haha!

I agree... The earlier TD concerts were much more enjoyable because of that
