• SONAR
  • X3c--Deleting Synths: Audio Dropout. The audio engine has been stopped unexpectedly.

Whenever I delete a soft synth, I get this message:
Audio Dropout.  The audio engine has been stopped unexpectedly.

I've tested this on two machines, both with different motherboards, graphic cards, etc.

This is with Sonar X3c.

Cakewalk thinks its my "system configuration", but as I said, it's happening on two different systems. This doesn't interfere with anything, but I shouldn't be getting this message...

Update your audio drivers and firmware.
Grab yourself a copy of latency monitor.
http://www.resplendence.com/latencymon

Are you using the same soft synth all the time?
Are you using the same audio interface all the time?
Please could you update your footer with your normal system (see my footer as an example):
http://forum.cakewalk.com/editprofile.aspx

Thankyou...

p.s. Could you please give us the specific steps for deleting your soft synth as there is more than one way to it. Thanks...

It doesn't matter whether I delete them using the browser or backtracking through history or even just deleting the instrument track, I get the same message.
It happens with any softsynth I insert then delete.
Audio drivers updated.  Issue happens on two distinct systems with different audio drivers.
Yes, same audio interface, MOTU 2408
All drivers up-to-date.

Please tell us your specific steps to insert, playback, and delete a soft synth so we can test it exactly
i.e. Where in the UI you delete the synth, what soft synth, is the project playing etc. etc. Do you have 64 bit precision engine disabled... etc

I see no issues deleting a soft synth myself but I still need to know if you are on 64 or 32 bit windows/sonar and your specific steps.

So please run latency monitor (link above) when deleting your soft synths and see what you get.

Please run this:
http://forum.cakewalk.com/Driver-Boost-m2928792.aspx

Finally let us know if you are running a virus scanner and what  your latency/buffer settings are for your soundcard and sonar.

Also defrag.

Thanks...

64 bit OS, 64 bit Sonar X3c, softsynth can be 64 or 32, doesn't matter
Latency is fantastic, I already have latency monitoring software.
This DAW is a dedicated music production computer.
Defrag has nothing to do with it, system is always in top-notch condition and hard drive is defragged.

Since this problem is occurring on two separate computers, each with different hardware, I have to assume it is a Sonar issue.  If it were a driver issue or a sound card issue or any other type of hardware issue, it wouldn't be happening on two different machines.

I'll call CW on Monday.

For whatever the worth, I am not having this issue, and as a keyboard player I work all day with soft synths, adding and deleting frequently.

I did not offer the above as any sort of gloat - only posted it to suggest that since it is behaving differently for you than for me, that there may be something in how things are either set up or steps being done that contribute to the difference in behavior.

If we had more information to go on, perhaps we could get this sorted out for you over the weekend, rather than having to wait until Monday for you to call tech support.

Is this happening with the project playing or stopped?

You didn't respond to any of this....

* Finally let us know if you are running a virus scanner and what  your latency/buffer settings are for your soundcard and sonar.

* Please tell us your specific steps to insert, playback, and delete a soft synth so we can test it exactly
i.e. Where in the UI you delete the synth, what soft synth, is the project playing etc. etc. Do you have 64 bit precision engine disabled... etc

And why didn't you try this? It could be any one of your drivers getting in the way....

You also stated...

"""Since this problem is occurring on two separate computers, each with different hardware, I have to assume it is a Sonar issue"""

Since this problem is occurring on your machine and not mine or Bobs I have to assume you have an issue with both your machines or you haven't been clear with your steps to reproduce. I asked for clear steps to reproduce twice, and now Colin is asking you again how you do this.

You didn't bother to say if you tested the specific scenario with latency monitor when you had the issue, merely stating "Latency is fantastic, I already have latency monitoring software". I didn't ask you if your latency was good, I asked you what happened when you run this whilst deleting soft synths.

You confuse us by saying your drivers are up to date, yet then you say you are using two different audio drivers. Specifics would be good.

Finally if you have already assumed this issue is to do with Sonar as you have re-created this on two machines (have you ever considered that there may be similarities when you configured them, the sound card for instance and the way you configured Sonar?) why did you even bother posting and allow us to waste our time trying to help you if you are now going to Cakewalk?

Oh and please don't bother thanking us, or saying please, that would be polite.

Cheers...

Thanks for your help.  Unfortunately none of your remedies resolved this.  I went back over my Cakewalk Problem Reports of the past several months and I did submit a report about this issue, which I had forgotten.  Cakewalk's response was "reproducible", which means that my sense that it is a problem with Sonar is correct.  This doesn't mean that one's particular system is not involved.  Obviously if some, or many, people are not having this issue, it is not ONLY a problem with Sonar, but a more complex interaction with certain hardware/software combinations.

In the meantime, the workaround is simple and easy:  Turn off the audio engine before deleting a softsynth.  No big deal.
