  • Will the Piano Roll Ever be Easy to use?

I keep upgrading hoping the piano roll will be easy to use. It never seems to get easier. It seems like they made it even more frustrating in X2. Seems like easy piano roll editing died when they stopped supporting Project 5.

Any ideas on getting a grasp on the piano roll? Any videos that help you get a grasp on the tools? I'm pretty frustrated just trying to get in a simple chord progression. I can't seem to get a proper grid. annoying.

I just want an easy grid that I can drop notes in and not have to change cursors and it's easy to change the quantize setting. The editing in X2 seems even worse than sonar 8 and it was pitiful in sonar 8.

I think if you will watch a couple of youtube videos on PRV, or even just set aside some time to just play with the PRV (while having the Sonar PDF manual open) you will love it once you get the jest of how it works.

I know it took me a while to get the grasp on how the different tools works...and I know I probably still have a lot to learn yet...but I love editing with the PRV now.  Just don't get frustrated and give up on it.  It's worth the effort to learn for sure.

Strange. I find the PRV in X2/X3 quite easy to use (except for the Track Pane on the right side). But I've never used Sonar 8 so what do I know?

I love PRV view. It is one of the most important for a midi/softsynth musician. I have heard from others in this forum that Sonar PRV view is among the best compared to other DAW. (Sorry I am bias.)  Invest some time to learn from the manual and video. You will be rewarded. Be sure to learn the smart tool too! It will enhance your workflow eventually.

+1 - SONAR includes my favorite/"natural" feeling PRV.   Interestingly enough, I never quite jelled with P5's PRV.

I've tried the Pro Tools and the Reaper piano roll views and Sonar's is far easier and more intuitive. You just need to sit down and learn the basics.

The OP has been on the forum since 2004 and still hasn't figured out the PRV.

I preferred the tool modifiers in 8 for PRV over tools in the X series.  That was way easier and user friendly than what we have now.  As for my preference/work flow, the Smart tool (and Tools module/HUD) sucks.

Don't bother saying I don't know how it works or it's just me, etc.  It doesn't work for my methods/preferences like SONAR 8.  Plain and simple.
