  • Will the Piano Roll Ever be Easy to use? (p.2)

I went back to see where (what version) the MIDI smart tool could be configured and it was in version 7.  That's what I would like for the Smart tool in the X series.  That is what I consider smart, personalized configuration.  Can't do that with the 'dumb' tool in X1, 2 or 3.

Now I've made my point clear.

Kind regards,

P.S.  Good one, Alex!  @Charlie, I am sure you are responding to the OP and not my post.  Otherwise, I would have had a word.  Nonetheless, much respect for your work.

I keep upgrading hoping the piano roll will be easy to use. It never seems to get easier. It seems like they made it even more frustrating in X2. Seems like easy piano roll editing died when they stopped supporting Project 5. Any ideas on getting a grasp on the piano roll? Any videos that help you get a grasp on the tools? I'm pretty frustrated just trying to get in a simple chord progression. I can't seem to get a proper grid. annoying. I just want an easy grid that I can drop notes in and not have to change cursors and it's easy to change the quantize setting. The editing in X2 seems even worse than sonar 8 and it was pitiful in sonar 8.

The Piano Roll is one of my most used editing tools to enhance (read fix my mistakes) my MIDI tracks. After you use it for awhile the tools become second nature. Selecting note resolution (grid) is easily setup in PT.

when I first used the piano roll some years ago, it was confusing but compared to other DAW's I believe sonars is the best and has the simplest functions.

like I said, watch some videos. the one I posted before shows you just how easy it really is.
at most points you don't even need to switch tools, the smart tools does almost everything (along with KB shortcuts)
for drums it is super friendly, for instruments I find it a little bit more in-depth but still very user friendly

I went from Sonar 5 to X1 and the jump was difficult at first. Then, I learned to use the ALT key. Pretty much back to where I was speed-wise with Sonar 5. I only rarely come up against "how do I..." stuff anymore.

Dan

The OP has been on the forum since 2004 and still hasn't figured out the PRV.

How long have you been on the forum, and how many rude post's like this have you posted?

I love the right-click lasso selecting. I even mistakenly do it in another daw I use. :)

Not to hijack the thread, but you just reminded me of an issue I'm having. When I try to copy some drum events like a ride pattern, I draw a rectangle around the events and it highlights them ALONG with some random events outside the rectangle like a kick or snare. What would cause this?

You can see how long by checking out the profile under the avatar.  As for it being rude, perhaps but a long time user shouldn't have a problem using a fundamental feature. I have to wonder what the OP is doing that is so difficult. Oh and as far as being on a pedestal I sure never put myself on it.

The real problem is that the OP just made a claim about the PRV being hard to use. I know, and I suspect you also know, that the PRV is not hard to use. So how does one answer? Just say it isn't, and go back and forth asserting one over the other endlessly? Or simply observe that maybe its time for the OP to learn how the PRV works.  Keep in mind the OP never asked for advice just asserted a false proposition.

For many that is not much different from trolling. It seems to have worked at least on your response.

Lassoing the velocity tails of other notes in the PRV will include them by default. You can disable this with a registry edit. See page 739 in the X3 Reference Guide.

Thanks for the tip. Although the extra events being selected are nowhere near the selection box. Regardless, I'll try it and let you know what happens.
