SONAR Mavens,
 
I'm pretty sure I went through this with my now-ancient version of Cakewalk but I don't remember the solution.
 
I just purchased SONAR X3 as an upgrade to Home Studio 2004.  I have a USB Audio device called M-Audio Fast Track Pro and expect to do recording and playback via that device.  I configured the audio driver in SONAR for WDM operation which I understand to be the best if it is supported.  When I do so, I can hear audio, but the MIDI output is lost.  This is because the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth disappears from the list of MIDI devices.  If I switch back to MME, the synth comes back but then I get no audio.  In both cases, the audio profiling passes although in the WDM case, it only works for the 44.1kHz and 48.0(?)kHz sampling rates which should be OK for my purposes.  Also, my recollection is that ASIO did not work at all but I forget what the failure mode was exactly.  What am I doing wrong?
 
Forgive please if this is a newbish question.  I'm still something of a newbie even though I've been using Cakewalk products for years.

Best to forget about the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth and use the soft synths supplied with SONAR. TTS-1 should be an easy drop in replacement.

So the soft synths just look like MIDI devices to SONAR?

Do you have the latest Asio version for the M-Audio Fast Track?

Use ASIO with the M Audio, I have the exact  same interface and WDM will not give you the best results.
 

Soft synths provide sound sources hosted inside the DAW. They can replace MIDI output devices like the Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth. A MIDI keyboard is still a very useful tool for input.
 
FWIW, as others have suggested, you might want to investigate ASIO mode in addition to WDM. Make sure to test the latest drivers too. Whichever driver and mode combination works best for you, is the one to use.

Thanks, all.  I just downloaded drivers from M-Audio for the Fast Track Pro so they should be current.  Perhaps I did something wrong in my configuration of ASIO.  I'll try it again when I get home.
