  • Old WRK file - some of them not opening and crashing sonar x64 - good in sonar 32 bit

Did anyone noticed that in some cases some old WRK files (created around 1999 or so) are not usable on Sonar x64?

Sonar remains "freezed" and you can only close the application (crash).

Tried on 2 different pc.

The same files seems to open without problems on other pc running 32 bit OS (and so Sonar 32 bit).

????

Thanks,

Giorgio

I occasionally find this with old .wrk projects.

I have a 32 bit install of Sonar 8.5 for working with these. If  I open them up in 8.5 and save them as a .cwp, then I usually have no issues opening them in SPLAT.

Same here. Old .wrk files are 32 bit and will work best in 32 bit Splat. I still have 32 bit 8.3 on my XP system & both 32 & 64 bit Splat installed.

Oh, thanks, so some of you are confirming ....

Just to know..... (and the workaround....).

One day I could collect and open all those files on a 32bit pc, and reconvert it in cwp format.....

Bye bye,

Giorgio

The project files that are created by Sonar are not 32 bit or 64 bit. What I mean is any version of Sonar can open any file created by Sonar or Pro Audio. What could be happening is a plugin within the wrk file may cause a problem for Sonar. Or it may be bitbridge that is causing the problem loading the old 32 bit plugin.
You might try loading these troublesome projects in safe mode.

Interesting, I was entirely unaware that WRK files contain plugins???

No, sorry. I already tried loading those files in safe mode and bypassing all plugins. No way.

It's a matter of SOME (not all, only some) old WRK files (created many years ago) that are NOT good on sonar x64 (I tried x2, x3 and platinum, on 2 different pc) - Sonar freezes and you can only close the application.

The same files loaded on 32bit computers (and so using Sonar 32 bit - different versions) are fine.

Another question please:

did someone installed a 32bit on sonar on a 64bit pc with sonar x64 working (with all plugins working too)?

I mean, if I try, everything should go smoothly or my x64 installation will be affected too?

My question is in particular regarding all the plugins installed in 64bit mode (those plugins will be overwrited????)

(I need just a minimal install of the 32 bit copy).

Thanks again,

Giorgio

I agree, it's not necessarily down to plugins. For me, it's .wrk files that I created way before I even started using plugins (from my Pentium 166Mhz and Athlon 850Mhz days). Back then my projects were mainly MIDI using external sound modules, and all audio went through the internal effects on my Yamaha DS2416 cards.

The projects were probably created in CWPA7 or CWPA9  (or maybe Sonar XL / Sonar 3 / Sonar 5).

There's a strong possibility that the files were originally created in CWPA then edited/saved in an early version of Sonar.

Anyhow, Sonar 8.5 seems to be the best for loading these and converting them to cwp files.

Well I've just spent the last 3-4 hours going through all my WRK files and getting them saved to Platinum format - at least the ones I want to keep... before I move them into yet another format, slightly depressed I think the stuff I did in 1995-1998 was much better than I do now... oh well.

I only had a few projects that would not open in 64 bit Sonar... I think it might have been because they were pointing to a WAV files to trigger off or something. It certainly opened about 95% of my WRK files. I didn't bother trying to open in 32 bit.

None of my projects had plugins BTW so I had to add a TTS-1. Some looping was discarded so I had to repair that.
