I know this is the wrong forum, but it has the right people and "computers" ain't gettin' any response right now, so...

I just learned my Seaside gold power supply has died, taking my Asus motherboard with it (I've been running with a i7-950/48 GB) and I need to choose between these replacements. Had originally planned to wait for Haswell-E 6/8 core but the universe intervened... Is there any real difference between the i7 3930 and i7 4930 6 core choices for running heavy vst/sample packages in X3? The 3930 is currently on sale for $449 at new egg till Monday and it looks liker the 4930 is stuck at $579 at the moment... and I figure the Sandy motherboards might be cheaper too... but, if the 4930 is going to get me another instance of DIVA without squishing my cpu..... I'm up for it...

I was frequently taxing my 950... Also, any thoughts on motherboards? I have both firewire PCI and PCIe cards, am going to add a couple SSDs, and have 3 speedy Samsung drives at present...plus a basic graphics card. Don't really need a bunch of stuff beyond support for external drives/usb 2/3 as this is a pure music machine... and while Seaside has gotten great reviews from silent computing, I may switch there too, although I figure the universe knew I was underpowered (too many power hungry tools like Diva and LuSH) and has given me this push. Any thoughts would be much appreciated, as cyber monday will save me a few duckets on the new power supply, board and maybe cpu...

Thanks!

I have a i7 3930k sitting in an ASUS 9x79 pro mobo that uses the lga 2011 CPU socket. It has 6 SATA 6g ports.
I find it perfect for DAW use.

Thanks, Mudgel...
I've decided to go with the 4930 with your mb, using a corsair Hydro Series H80i cpu water cooler, figuring that if I decide to overclock at some point the cooler running 4930 paired with the H801i will be a bit more stable...

Besides, Newegg has an additional $40 off coupon going for the 4930 right now which almost brings it down to the price of a 3930...

this should keep me fat and happy for quite awhile or at least until Intel decides to release their anticipated 6/8 core haswell e series down the road at a reasonable price point.
