  • Removing the Pro Channel from X2 (or X3) Producer? (p.11)

After tracking yet another singer tonight, I would like the record button to be permanently removeable.  Not just invisible, but removed.  And the mute button should be on as default on vocal tracks..

And, I can't find the dubly button.

Time for bed, I think..

The nature of plug-in effects will always be subjective. I don't like the Concrete Limiter on program material at all, but it works really well for vocals and drums...for me. The PSP Audioware old school compressor emulation is wonderful if you like thick, but not if you like transparent. And so on.

The PC modules provide more tools for the toolbox. There are many instances where I like those modules better than anything else I have. There are other instances where plug-ins from competitors do the job better. So what? This shouldn't be news to anyone.

Bottom line for me is the PC lets me get projects done faster. This would be meaningless if the plug-ins weren't good, but they are. I think it's really important not to get hung up on minutiae when the goal is to make music. When I DO want or need to get hung up on minutiae, I do A-B blind testing. It's amazing how few people can consistently pick something they feel is inferior or superior to something else. Many times the answer is that they're "different," not "better" or "worse."

My favorite line in speaker reviews is where the reviewer says that a particular speaker "revealed things I'd never heard before!" This is to be expected when no two speaker types have the exact same response curve and diffraction characteristics :)

If you don't like the PC, don't use it. If you like it, use it. If you like it sometimes, use it sometimes. Regardless, I would miss it very much if it went away because of the degradation this would cause to my workflow and completion time for projects.

As to whether being able to remove it should be an option, if it was trivial there would be no harm done but I suspect having this option would be just one more "moving part" to go wrong.

I find the bit about PC being VST based somewhat odd.  I'd have thought that one advantage of PC was that it could short-circuit a standards-related interface and gain some performance at the expense of portability.

I (really) like the looks and the handiness of the PC but its size is a problem with an effect that needs a large view.  Turning its EQ into a regular plugin so it could be seen kind of defeated the whole purpose of the PC.  A paradox, but a reasonable exception since the EQ was really small.

I was a little shocked when I first found out the truth about PC modules. But it also makes sense because when expanded came out they allowed third party developers access. Choosing VST suddenly made sense.

It showed careful planning that I wasn't let in on. But I think it was a smart move.

I believe I have stated very clearly where I believe my problems with ProChannel lie, and it should be obvious to anyone who read my posts that they're not solved by "ignoring" ProChannel.I agree with Anderton that even if I usually don't like the PC modules, they are just more tools in the box. Which makes it extra annoying that I'm forced to use them in there,  creating extra steps when I want to combine them with non PC plugs. Also, that the possibility to remove it is described as "another moving part to go wrong" is ironic. Essentially I agree, but that was one of MY points about ProChannel, and was met by "ProChannel is a way of ensuring stability" (which is demonstrably false).
