  • Windows 8.1 + Mix Control 3.3 + Saffire Pro 40 - driver crash.

I got my first Windows 8.1 BSOD yesterday. This immediately pointed to saffire.sys.
I wasn't even running Sonar (software was not installed) and I think it may have happened when Windows triggered a notification sound (just speculation). I am running latest drivers and firmware everywhere (inc Windows update).

Clearly this is an issue to do with the Saffire Pro audio drivers, I've already emailed Focusrite and sent them my crash dump, I await their response.

Please note this was an extremely rare crash so if other Saffire users haven't experienced it yet I'm not surprised, but I'm posting this to here to compare notes with other Saffire users who might have Windows 8.1 issues in the next few weeks/months with Mix Control 3.3.

Cheers

Alex

I have the same setup and just installed Win8.1 and installed the 3.3 control center. I haven't had any issues yet. I'll report back if I do

Ouch... I have never jumped onto the new release wagon for Windows due to its track record, and lag for drivers to be updated (and made stable). I completely skipped Vista because of that one.

I am another person who is running a Saffire Pro 40 using Mix-Control 3.3 on Windows 8.1 without any issues, so it is likely that it is a combination of factors on your system that resulted in the crash, not just a fault in the Focusrite drivers.

Possibly true ... But 8.1 has been out for a few weeks. Jury is out. I agree and disagree at the same time.. Let us see how time is reserved for you... But when there is a BSOD with an arrow pointing like this "<----" to "saffire.sys" with AN EXTREMELY LOUD VOICE sadly there isn't much worry about hearsay or perception about what people might think ... Just facts and a report in the event viewer. ;) A smoking gun.... All has been ruled out. Still I had a great 8 hour recording session today without a crash... Just telling it how it how it is... Ego or whatever left behind..

I've been running MixControl 3.3 with Windows 8.1 since Oct 17.
I have not had any issues.
I have Firewire latency set to Medium, ASIO buffers at 256 samples, audio at 48 kHz.
I have the new usage logging/reporting disabled.

Well I'm on the same except I'm on 64 samples... Anyway so far it's still only happened once.

Well it's happened to me a few more times now (in Windows 7 as well), usually when web browsing, not Sonar... weird... anyway...
Response from Focusrite

Thanks for attaching (mini dump), that does indeed confirm the problem was with saffire.sys
It could be worth trying our beta driver and seeing if things are more stable? Please head over to beta.focusrite.com -> Direct Download:
http://beta.focusrite.com/file.php?id=1051

I'm chasing up to see if they have any further info.
(nb if you don't have this issue please do nothing).

Thanks...
