May be to have a look and ensure the Piano-View (track) within Sonar! Ensure the "Note" and "CC MIDI-Events" (Vol/Expression/etc) are valid (not zero or too low)! Perhaps, when it plays, you could watch the Virtual Keyboard and the MIDI/VSTi track's LED indicator, in order to tell it really responses or not?
Since it is Drum set, make sure to place the Notes within the Key-map (Key-switch or patch changed) in valid "Octal" area! It was happened to me once on the VSTi "Bass samples", which was placed a note that had "an Octal lower" from the Key-map, for example!
Also there are Global of MUTE and SOLO buttons, I would toggle it "back-and-forth" to ensure no hidden Mute or Solo tracks by a mistake "got Stuck"!
