This post is mainly directed to people at Cake. I know this probably wont be read by them but I had no idea where to send this.
 
After all the latest hacks against several large corporations and sites like Adobe, LinkedIn etc. I've started changing passwords all over the place. I don't know what systems Cakewalk are using but they seem ancient since they cant even handle special characters etc. That makes me a bit worried. I'm starting to get a bit tired of complanies not taking security seriously. I dont feel like I can trust Cakewalk with my personal details, creditcard info etc if security is so poor you cant even have complex passwords.
 
I really would like to know if there is a plan to raise the security for the site in the near future and what measures are being taken to keep our information safe. This isnt at all just a problem with Cakewalk. I've seen this with many others like Waves and Arturia. The latter was really interesting since it told you the password was changed. But when logging in it failed since it then couldnt handle the special characters. Cheez...

In the forum we are anyone we what to be, we can be many people, we can make up false identities and post pictures of someone else's studio and call it our own. So were's the risk of identity theft or having my credit card hi jacked there?
 
If your talking about purchasing at the Cakewalk store, then you should avoid on line shopping and make your purchases at a real store. 
It's the way the world works now and fancy passwords make very little difference. 
Lately a lot of hacks are originating from people logging in on there smart phones to phishing sites. 

It's the store I'm talking about. Not the forum.
 
Sure there's nothing secure about anything anymore. Strong passwords do make a difference even if little. Sure I could stop shopping online but thats not at all what I want. I think the companies should take their responsibility and make sure things at least are as safe they can be.

I don't need to enter special characters in facebook or twitter, what exactly is the issue here?
Just because a password doesn't require special characters doesn't mean it is insecure?

BTW the centre of your bank infrastructure is probably a mainframe from the 1970's - be afraid - be very afraid ;)

No you dont need to use special characters. But it makes passwords much harder to crack. Thats not something I make up, its a well known fact.
 
I do think that people are taking security to light heartedly. But that is one thing. I dont really think people should have to think much about these things. But the companies responsible for the systems should. You may laugh it of if you want.

It's probably unfair to single out Cakewalk as being less secure than other sites. However you are correct about the secure password issue.
 
I once attended a class on computer security. At the start, the lecturer asked everyone in turn to create a new Windows user account on a computer with a username and password. Then he ran some software that cracks passwords and left it running during the lecture. A screen at the front of the room displayed all the user names with ******** next to each. Gradually, one by one, most of the ********s became replace by their corresponding passwords, sometimes only partially at first. Ones that were cracked first were made up of actual words. Mixed upper and lower case took longer, more so with numerics, although not if it was recognised textspeak (e.g. things like "4u"). The only ones remaining uncracked were, as revealed afterwards, meaningless and unmemorable mixtures of letters, numbers and symbols. This dramatic demonstration convinced me of the importance of password protection.

you shouldn't assume anything regarding cake's security, just because you can't put in a special char (ALT code etc etc) .. also the fact a lot of these people are after far bigger number of users.. e.g. game console owners..
 
just because we get idiots on here trying to flog their wonky kitchens , has nothing to do with that side of it.
 
just add another layer, they don't have my card details.. like more , it goes via paypal.. and all cakewalk know is that I've paid for the item and that's that.
