Hi all

Has anyone tried ubuntu operating system with sonar. I see the program a lot and was wondering if its better than Windows.
I thought I could get an answer here.

I like it for office and Internet but not music or games... but if you enjoy messing about with operating systems it's great :)

Ubuntu Studio is an awesome build for recording music.

It comes with all kinds of great tools. My interface works with it and I have USB Hard Drive I boot my work laptop to and use that when I'm out of town for recording and practicing. I don't use it for gigs I really care about because I don't practice with it enough.

You cannot install Sonar on Linux yet, but there are people struggling with it.

IMHO it's not worth it. You can have plenty of fun doing music on Linux without Sonar.

I've never heard of that one. Thanks for the tip.

My thoughts were actually to see if Sonar would work in Ubuntu to see if another operating system would work better with Sonar.

I guess i'll stop thinking now.

I think there's a live disk you can try :)

I would not try Sonar on Ubuntu.  There are alternative programs like ardour that work well in linux.

I know Ubuntu and other Linux distros can use WINE to run software for Windows, but it is not always without problems.

Running it on wine is asking for trouble, however if anybody is mad enough to try as some sort of mad experiment (I doubt it will work) please post a youtube video!

Someone has made good progress getting Sonar to run on Linux. There was a thread a while back and lots of people were excited. I can't remember who it was. I never saw evidence personally, but I totally believed he was making substantial progress.

Still, why not just use Ardour? It would be great if we could port over all our VSTs. If I knew anyone who was interested in making their VSTs work on Linux, I would ONLY buy that brand.
