First of all, thanks for all the great ideas, like showing common mistakes as well as what to do right.

Some other points: Yes, I am currently a Gibson employee. Never thought of including it in my sig because I come to this forum primarily as a user; participation is not part of my job description and I come here on my own time . The only exception to that was answering questions about Gibson's intended acquisition of CW when that was first announced. As to whether the video would be done on my own or be part of what I do for Gibson, that remains to be seen. Gibson is into educating users so it would be a good fit, but there's a lot to do at Gibson. The video might end up being a "weekends" project...we'll see.

As to people being interested in the video but ultimately not buying it, that doesn't concern me. The first two videos did very well. People asked for more videos at the time, but I said I wasn't going to do videos just for the sake of doing videos. However, I think mastering in Sonar is a video well worth doing. In addition to techniques I would also cover some of the background on mastering.

As to guitar-oriented material, that's something else I've considered. But that might lend itself more to a series of videos on YouTube or something...not sure. For now, a video on mastering with Sonar seems to feel right.

Thanks again for all your input and the great suggestions!!

thx Craig...whatever you decide to do will be aces

And fwiw - I don't think you need to put your Gibson assoc in your sig - I believe you are an honourable person who would state a conflict of intereste/ulterior motive if you saw one or thought one may be possible.

Cheers

Craig,

Having seen your presentation on mastering at AES in SF a year or so ago, I know you can present the topic with great clarity.  One thing to consider, however - many of us have separate video-watchin' machines and music-makin' machines.  In other words, the audio on the machines with which we access the net (i.e., not our DAW machines) is likely to be inadequate to convey the nuances of mastering.

Edit: Maybe I misread your intent and you're talking about doing a DVD tutorial to be sold as opposed to online tutorials ... in which case, never mind.  :-)

AndertonDoes mastering seem like a good idea? Any other suggestions?

I'd have to say, "Yes."

I'd also be curious to hear your opinion of HarBal.

Craig - + a bunch for the suggestion and idea.  It would be fantastic to have some tutorial coverage on mastering and with Sonar tools for that.

I like just about all of the suggestions above.  Great crowd sourcing on thinking about what could be helpful.

I would think the tutorial could be cool if you covered mastering a few tracks - each with its own set of problems, and how you would point out what's making each one sound bad, and how to approach deducing how to get each one better.

I would add that it would be cool if you discussed reference tracks.  I realize you'll be using Sonar stuff only, but I'm using Magic A B now at the very end of my bus/signal flow and that's really convenient for flipping back and forth between what I'm working on and a song or songs of a similar energy.

That type of magic won't work here!

Excellent idea Craig.  I would add my voice to those calling for starting at the end of the mix process.  Also, I like the idea of doing both a quick walk-through of an entire mix, then adding tips and tricks, both positive and negative.
