  • Considering SoundCloud - good move? Things to watch out for?

Been thinking of signing up for a SoundCloud account to post some of my productions but have been a bit leary.
Probably would need to be a free account for now, my work is slow during the holiday season and my wife just got laid off her job.

It's been several years since I sat down and thoroughly read their EULA and at the time I recall reading something about that the free accounts didn't allow you to delete/remove materials once posted.  Don't know if that's still true or if that was a mis-read.

Anyway I would appreciate some direction/feedback, etc.

Thanks
...Steven

I think it's great. You can freely delete anything you like, and Soundcloud don't hold any rights or exclusivity over what you put there. It's pretty widely used in the trade; I send everything to clients via it.

It streams at some not-great, not-terrible quality, but it delivers as a download whatever you upload. I use it to send 24 bit master wav files to people. You can make tracks private and switch the dowloading on or off and all kinds of other stuff. It's really good.

Also, Sonar's integration with it is very handy.

I've got a free Soundcloud account. It's been fine as far as I can tell. I downloaded the mobile app because I only have internet on my phone, not at home. You can't post songs using the app, you have to use the website. I have been able to remove songs with no problem. I haven't seen any downside of having an account since I signed up 6 months ago. Hope that helps. :)

The smartphone app is really handy. I upload work in progress mixes to Soundcloud as a matter of routine, which is all really simple from within Sonar. Then I have them ready to stream on headphones when I'm out doing the grocery shopping or whatever.

The free account limits how many minutes you can store, so you have to manage that. The paid account is unlimited. Usefully, though, the limit goes on time, not file size, so you can upload as high quality as you like.

You'll get better audio quality (and a larger potential audience) if you upload your music to YouTube. They use AAC encoding at 196kbps (provided you upload the video at at least 720p), which is way better quality than a 196kbps MP3.

I believe Soundcloud only streams at 128kbps, MP3 encoding.

It's simple enough to create an audio video for YouTube, just use Windows Movie Maker and select an image.

PS YouTube is 100% free and there are no limits.

If it's audience size you're after, you should be on everything.

Or use Gobbler and send 24 bit wavs. :-)
They say I've sent close to 40gb this month. Wahoo!

I looked into SoundCloud but was put off by the sound quality. I use SoundClick instead. Not as popular as SoundCloud and no Sonar integration but still easy to use.
