So as I understand it, if Sonar wins we're not cool anymore? Pro Tools users are too cool to vote so they lose the contest but win the coolness award. :$

no, its just that getting your friends to vote up your girlfriend for prom queen was never cool, and when she won anyone with any real knowledge of the facts knew it was BS, and it actually worked against her behind the scenes

Any serious music professional worth their salt wouldn't waste their time by even staying at that site once they hit it, and even if they did stay and look at that poll they might just say...

'figures, bunch of fanboy produca's lovin' SONAR, not much love for PT, i like that, good, stay in the bedroom where ya belong'

i'm not looking to insult anyone here, its not about what i think, think about what any knowledgable experienced pros, the people making the decisions in the industry, might think when your DAW (girlfriend) wins, how she won, and where she won, peace

I find it ironic for something as simple as a "popularity contest" that it can incite folks into throwing rocks. I think the comments on that web site are pretty accurate regarding X3. The more unbiased the comment, the more weight it carries.

My concern is more simple... which is that music is universal, and should be available to everyone. Getting ideas down and put together is really the purpose of a DAW, not to be a "serious music professional worth their salt." That statement seriously separates the demographics into "music for us" and "music for the masses." To put that in perspective, I classify myself as an "avid hobbyist," but probably more so that the average hobbyist. I have never used PT, so cannot speak to it... and since my "gf" treats me right, why seek another??

An interesting "test" of any software is to let a total novice take a shot at it and play with the GUI. I have a lot of musician friends who have never used any DAW at all, so every once in a while I will let them plop down in front of X3 and let them left click here, right click there, etc. and ask them if it "makes sense," or ask "what are you looking at?" and "what do you want to do with that?" A few of them liked so much that they went on to buy if for themselves; and since I was the one that introduced them to it, I take the time to help them to learn... so helps to build the community that SONAR already is (which is a pretty strong one).

If this is in response to my comment, you can twist it any way you want - but that is NOT what I meant! This has nothing to do with coolness...

You cannot dispute the fact that most working studio's (ie: studio's that run as a full time business, not a hobby and not enthusiasts) use Pro Tools, LOGIC or Digital Performer. I am NOT SAYING ALL, I'm saying most. These studio's and the people that work them simply do not care about popularity contests with DAW's - that's all I'm saying!

Hey - I use Sonar, and I use another "smaller" DAW I will not name. I'm not an advocate for the big three I just mentioned, I'm just trying to put this into perspective...  "you need to understand the demographics..."  If 2000 hobbyists and enthusiasts say that Reaper or FL is a more popular DAW that Pro Tools, that really needs to be taken with a grain of salt ...

Don't get me wrong...I voted cos I really like Sonar. It's my favourite and it's the main one I use. Also have PT10 and Reaper.
But please, when competing at the top with FL it's not a very good sign. It misleads a lot of people into thinking Sonar is not pro.
Sonar deserves to be compared with the best.

I don't think pro tools is the standard anymore.
pro tools filled their daws in class rooms to teach a lot of student thus making it a standard and the most known to new users in the field.
as far as general studios go now, there are so many different daws being used, because pro tools is HD also had a big factor in it as well.

To those that are pointing out Pro Tools being so far down in the popularity contest, I think you need to understand the demographics. I know a lot of Pro Tools users, and not one of them would take a moment out of their day to respond to a poll like this - especially when it is just a ploy to add you to their email list.

Just sayin ...

Thats funny, I wonder why I did not need to give my email in order to vote. That may be a feature they added during the course of the poll as it became popular. I did not give them my email and I was still able to vote anyway. hmmm wonder what I am missing here.

X3 is leading the pack in many more ways than this poll. Very solid and a pleasure to use.

Hey groovey etc...
So bring it on sonar, when I was in studios this sort of thing cost a million quid... Really it did. And occasionally I relive it... Cause for no complaints...

I did vote, but the results are to be take with a pinch of salt. I mean, had I not read this thread, I would not have known about the survey at all. Hence, there will be thousands of other DAW users who do not know about it.

What we need is sales data from all DAW producers to get a snapshot of user figures. Even then, there could be more sales of a not so good product compared to sales of the best. Maybe I can get a Mintel Report.
