gave my opinion about a guitarist would you care? If yes, why would you care?

I would care, because one can't know every guitarist on the planet.  I'm sure there's many I don't know about.  Your choices, after listening to them would give me an idea of your taste.  I especially like to know WHY you like such and such guitarist;  It helps me put your opinion in context.

Some people are raised on a quasi-academic idea of guitar-ship, like beginner, intermediate, advanced.  I shun those kinds of characterizations.  Some one can be a complete beginner (like the guy I heard play *romance* in guitar center yesterday) and be a good guitar player at the same time.  He felt that piece though his hands weren't quite up to the challenge.

I'm always interested in hearing fellow musicians opinions, especially those whose music I've heard, and admired. Sometimes it gives me a fresh perspective on my own opinions.

Checking out the opinions of others is how I find 90% of the new music I buy.  That said, for me it's all about the music itself, not a person or a guitarist.

If I ...

...were a swan, I'd be gone.
...were a train, I'd be late.
And if I were a good man, I'd talk with you more often than I do.
...were to sleep, I could dream.
 ...were afraid, I could hide.
...go insane, please don't put your wires in my brain.
...were the moon, I'd be cool.
...were a rule, I would bend.
...were a good man, I'd understand the spaces between friends.
 ...were alone, I would cry.
And if I were with you, I'd be home and dry.
And if I go insane, will you still let me join in with the game?
If I were a swan, I'd be gone.
If I were a train, I'd be late again.
If I were a good man, I'd talk to you more often than I do.

(Sorry, the Pink Floyd song was the first set of wires that came to my brain)

First; thanks for replies so far. It was a serious question.

I read articles about guitarist that will include a lot of detailed information.
The most interest I have is when their music is being analyzed. I really don't care about other details or what the author thinks. Sometimes their choice of equipment is interesting but I find the routing of it to be the reason for my interest.

I think that is because I enjoyed sounding like them even though I wasn't playing their licks note for note.
I know for a fact that it isn't equipment...I've been told many times while jamming, as I'm sure others have too, that I would sound like him or him. The reason was a would be thinking about their "attitude"...their choice of certain modes or playing techniques.  ( easy to understand...easy for people to think you sound like Chet when you play that way...doesn't have to be one of his works)

Anyway....I'm different for those that have responded so far. I don't care about others opinions unless they are discussing the technical aspects of the player. I guess that is when I learn the most about not only the player but the person talking about them too. "I like the way he sounds" ...well that's just not valuable info to me but if the statements are such as; He leans on the Dorian and can play an example...then I'm interested. It's all about the music to me.

Now that changes when I'm talking to a guitarist that I plan on working with. Everything changes then. Then his opinions and his ability to analyze (abilities) do come into play.
That is info I retain. As far as who like who here...I won't remember after reading. Glad we won't be having tests on this LOL.

Seriously, I'm not so interested in the "I like/dislike" sort of preferences or "best" or "top" or that sort of thing.

But if someone is offering something more insightful about a player, or a school of playing, or where something came from, or how how someone fits in context, or something like that, then I am interested.

I'm always curious about how someone gets their "sound."  I remember hearing that one guy used Marshal JCM-800's and I was thinking "No way!  Those are too thin to get that sound!"  A little research found that they were actually modded by Mike Soldano so I went and found a '79 JMP and had Mike do the same mod.  Oh yeah!!!

Equipment can be fun.

If I knew anybody or was the type that could listen to a recording and know for a fact what equipment from the guitar to the mic's were used then I would have an interest in talking equipment. To date every person that has talked about equipment to me knows what is being used. It would be much different if they could hear a recording and tell be.
How many times have we heard someone compare.....pickups...I'll use pickups...."this brand is blah blah and this is blah blah....well listen to a recording of those pickups and then tell which is which. Ya, then you have something.

So the fun of equipment is what I hear- what I can do with it. What others have to say has just never helped me find what I was looking for. I had to use it and make my own determination.

It seems like every aspect of music has been that way for me. When others talk about what they think I get that deer/headlight look going. I know if and when I use the piece of equipment is when the evaluation will have a true meaning. Until then...it's babbling. Useless info.

Now the obvious...

If I'm riding in a car listening to Earl Klugh -Finger Paintings and they don't like him....change the disc....that's all it means to me. I don't care why he doesn't like him. I won't remember if he tells me.
Now if we're riding to a practice session and learning some Earl Klugh for a session then it means a lot. I'd change the disc while turning around.

Maybe it's a personal flaw. Maybe I should have more interest in others opinions about musicians and equipment...but I don't. Not until it's time to perform. I think that's when the opinions carry weight. That's when you find out if the person can talk the talk and walk the walk. I'm sure I acquired that attitude from many years of dealing with musicians both on and off the stage so I don't expect anything we say here will change it.

I do find it interesting that my opinion about a musician could help another. I don't understand how it could unless I was demonstrating their use and thoughts about playing techniques or theoretical approaches ...maybe favored chord forms/voicings but even so...I don't think things will be changing for me.
