  • Seriously need some midi assistance X2

I asked before about using 2 audio/midi interfaces and making them communicate together but could not find any assistance.... So I've since just ran long midi cabled across my room to use all devices in my FW-1884. The problem.. Let's start with the objective. I want to use my Roland MV8800 as my "main" sequencer/sampler I want to control the sounds (internal & soft synths) with my Fantom X7. I have the Fantom running midi in/out 1 & the MV8800 midi in/out 2 both of my Tascam FW-1884. So when l load for example Dimension into my synth rack in X2 I can only play the sounds in midi omni mode which defaults when I select "none" or omni. But when I try and select FW-1884 > midi 1 > midi channel 1 I get no sound. Any suggestions? Am I being clear enough? Can any one point me to where I can find step by step instruction to accomplish this objective? (Video, manual, forum post etc...)??  Not sure what other info may be needed but just ask. Thanks!

The only thing that comes to mind is the mode you are running in. ASIO is exclusive, and will lock SONAR into only one input source. Any time I have run two controllers at the same time, WDM mode was the only way to get SONAR to see both controllers, assign channels, etc.

It seems you may already be doing this, but not sure. If so, there are a lot of folks on this forum who know MIDI very well that will pass by at some point.

I concur, from the information given so far.

Thanks Mettelus,

Yes I'm running in WDM mode. Some configuration examples and results are 1. midi > instruments > Users Instrument > General Midi > All Inputs > Omni = sound or 2. midi > instruments > Users Instrument > Default > All Inputs > Ch 1 also gives me sound on the fantom only but if I select midi > instruments > Users Instrument > Default > All Inputs > Omni gives me sound on both the X7 & the MV88. I'm trying to get set up to where I can assign a patch in Addictive keys, Dimension or whatever soft synth i choose to a midi channel on the MV88 for sequencing but play the notes on the Fantom as my controller.  Also since I want to do my sequencing externally from Sonar do I need to use "midi tracks"? All I've done is loaded the synths in the synth rack. I haven't created a midi track or anything just using the default that it creates.

Man... I am trying to attach a screenshot and cannot figure out "how"... let me try to describe instead....

Edit... good thing I have personal website for the "url" requirement!!

Anyway... when you run WDM mode, "Omni" will accept input from any controller connected (you can play both keyboards at the same time even).

In SONAR, when I insert a MIDI track, in the track view is a drop down which I always set to "All" (the default is "Custom")... this is right above the FX bins above the tracks.

From there, you can then expand a track till you see nothing more coming into view. The "I" line is the inputs to that track... and that is where I assign the controllers. This way you can specifically assign each track as you see fit.

I *think* the way you are doing it is a "global" setting, but not sure... meaning you are either getting both (Omni), one, or the other.

I have never tried to attach a screenshot before, and it is asking for a url??? Ugh

Edit: Um... url for a picture??? Come on....

Your issues are simple midi routing issues.

Yes you need midi tracks to play MV sampled sounds, so insert midi track; input = Fantom midi port/ch, output =  MV8800 midi port/ch

if you cannot select those midi ports above you have issues with your interface..midi issues, nothing to do with audio at all. (ie driver mode = don't care).
if you can select those ports and you don't hear the MV then check the MV system setttings, or, simply connect FX out to MV in via midi cable and ensure it works.

but regarding the Fantom:

a) wondering why you are not having the Fantom connected via USB ?..
b) you will ALWAYS hear the fantom X sounds unless you turn local control = off in the synth

regards

I get the drop down menu and can see all my ports & channels from both my interfaces. like I said I can only get Dimension or any soft synth to play when I select either Omni or All inputs
---> midi ch. 1. I can play & rec the soft synth sounds using the MV8800 when I route > FW1884 Port 2 --> Midi Ch. 1 in Sonar and Midi A ! in the MV88 but still can't get the sound to trigger by playing them on the Fantom. How did you do that screen shot?

Just a thought..

I have the Fantom G and by default it will not transmit midi out. In order to use the Fantom G via midi connector with external gear this has to be enabled on a per channel basis.

Have you confirmed that you are getting midi out from the Fantom X?...

Thanks Mystic,

Yea I can use midi out. I use to run the Fantom straight into the MV never had a prob before.

just wanted to make sure you haven't pulled a "mystic" ie, spend hours on some daft finger trouble thing.. :D

so, will assume that you are just using single mode with midi ch set to ch 1 on the Fantom.. perhaps try to eliminate the midi interface as a source of the problem by downloading and using the Fantom X USB midi driver from Roland.. ?
