Is the only reason you don't want to work with DM's is the mute/solo thing or because of the way DM's display the notes?

It's both... But I could live with using a drum map if it would work... right now for me not having Solo and mute is as bad as not having it at all... I continually need to remember how many and which tracks to select and solo... If it's easier for them to fix these issues than to add virtuial synth ports to the Instrument definitions list I'd be happy to use it...
 
For me right now I'm planning to drop any more use of AD until some resolution is found and retunr to using Session Drummer... But my heart isn't in it as I was beginning to appreciate so many things AD has that SD does not... <sigh>...
 
I guess I'll post a bug report about the solo issue? I just posted a Feature Request to add virtual synth ports to the Instrument Definitions list....?

They need to be constantly updated if the mapping changes  - the getting-note-names-from-plugin should be automatic (it is in BFD2 anyway).
 
Personally, I also find the drum map view less appealing and clunkier looking than the PRV when it identifies a drum synth.

When a track is designated a drum track, it does not display the note length... Instead it places a diamond shaped (one shot) and it's clear as a bell to read... No note lengths to interfere...
 
The Drum Maps Require more screen real estate as it uses larger fonts... and the way it displays velocity is very hard for me to jusdge quickly as it uses a far more compressed overall range...

VSTs have provision for note names, but unfortunately not everyone implements.
We do ask for them which is why it just appears for some synths.
 
It's possible to add entries to the master.ins to get the keys to show in the PRV when right clicking the keyboard.
 
It involves creating an entry for your drum keys of choice in the master.ins.
There's a .Note Names section.
You can create a [AD Drums] section, then put in the list of keys.
 
In addition, you'll need to put the same block in the 
.Instrument Definitions section

• =1..128
  Key[*,*]=AD Drums
  Drum[*,*]=1

 
 
Save the updated ins file, restart SONAR.
Then to use the new choice, just right click the keyboard in the PRV.

On further investigation it turns out this doesn't get the names displayed. there is no way to assign the .ins to a virtual MIDI port...

Thanks Keni.  I haven't had the occasion yet for using Addictive Drums, but I must admit that I was hoping it would feel more integrated than the way this thread describes.   Given that it is included within Sonar, and the way we've come to expect that level of integration with V-Vocal and Melodyne.  
 
When the muse pays a visit and I want to lay down ideas quickly, the last thing I want to do is engage my left-brain with wiring things up.  I know, we can have project templates and so on, but I'd like to think that using AD is as straightforward as using a region FX

Yeah... I'm with you. If there isn't a way to deal with this, I'm back to using Session Drummer until I can afford BFD... AD is too cumbersome for me without displaying the note names. I guess that's something I've always taken for granted as I used external hardware which works with .ins files (brundlefly - you're absolutely correct that there doesn't appear any way of applying the ins to a vertual midi port) and then I used the DR008 which being an fXpansion product displayed note names as does their BFD... and then I switched to Session Drummer 3 which displays the names...
 
I don't think I'll be able to work with AD unless/until this issue is addressed. Drum Maps are not me preference but even they are no help as I lose intelligent solo/mute... so I willfeel badly that I can't use AD and continue to dream of BFD as I have for so long...
 
...and continue using Session Drummer 3... <sigh>...

I got a chuckle out of this! How many times have I sat there saying " If this SOB would just do what I want, the way I want, everything would be alright!"

Kenni have you tried/looked at BFD eco? Really good little program. You might be able to get it on sale this holiday. Got mine for like $30 - $40.

And although I still use ezDrummer, it's not exclusive anymore. It just takes too long to load at 96k sample rate. SD3 loads fast and eco loads quick too, though not as fast as SD3. And when I want a quick beat to go with an idea I have, SD3 is first call with Andy Johns kit.

Back to eco. Its not full featured as BFD3, but it has much more tweak ability than ezD. And 90% of the time when I get something in a certain drum program, I usually finish the song in it. And eco gives me all what I need.

thanks for that info... I'm too broke to buy even BFDeco, so it's not something I can do now. I was expecting/hoping to switch to AD, but unless this issue is resolved somehow, I can't... It was fun to play with using one of their' built in beats, but editing is a nightmare for me this way...
 
I tried using the Drum Map so kindly supplied, but I can't live with the solo/mute issues there and I'm back to SD3... I'm not totally unhappy with SD3 as I get a decent basic kit (I default to a Slate Kit I modified - I'm using the OldZepKit_Dry but I've replaces the kick drum in it with the Slate SizzleKit_Dry kick.... it works pretty well for me

I understand we all work in our own way, and to mess with that or be unable to be in our perfect comfort zone can be a big drag on work flow, but that being said, abandoning something as good as AD because you don't like the way the notes look, or having to take an extra step to solo and mute seems extreme.  It just doesn't seem "bad" enough to warrant exile into Session Drummer!
 
I only say this cause AD is so excellent.  Perhaps trying a new work flow, or attempting to "get used" to the look of Drum Map notes in the PRV would be a better alternative than abandoning AD in hopes of a possible future feature request.

I just read thru the specs and manual (a bit) for BFDeco and it seems to me about the equivalent of the version of AD we got with X3...
 
I will see if I can scrape up the $30 for v1 that I see it for though it will [robably take me a few weeks (yeah, that bad), but it's only 32bit... V1.5 (an additional $20 upgrade) is finally 64 bit... that will take another few weeks and maybe longer...
 
Sadly this pinched the value of X3 for me a tiny bit... Tho AD was not a top of the list item for me, it was part of the perceived purchased value...
 
On the good side? I'm finding X3 an improvement on X2 for sure... just still missing the mark (for me) with a continually shrinking list.... It seems to be shrinking more rapidly than X2 so I have hopes of more adjustments soon...
 
Thanks for pointing out the low price on BFDeco as it may just work out for me better than AD if/when I come up with a little cash...

I know it seems a small issue to you, but AD itself is a small issue to me as I'm fairly comfortable with Session Drummer... It's lacking a few things but what it has works well and I like some of the drum kits that I have for it...
 
While AD is a cool little program and I would like to start using it, the matter of displaying the note names instead of the piano is quite important to me... Far too slow for me to continually search when the name can simply be provided with other softwares... and as for using Drum Maps? I would do so if it was simply a amatter of not being thrilled with the display it gives, but I can already see myself in an internal rage repeatedly needing to pay so much detail-attention to select complete solo/mute choices...
 
I'm not angry, not even a little... If a solution to any of the method/items we've been discussing here turns up I will greatfully return to working with AD... I'm only a tad disappointed... it's not enough of a problem to slow down my work... and that's what it would be for me to use AD as things are right now...

Hey all - for what it's worth, if you want to know a bit more about drum maps, I created a short video a while back showing the process of creating one from scratch and shows some of the benefits.
 
I don't yet have x3.  I would be happy to update this video from the Sonar 5 version it was recorded in, but the drum maps haven't really changed since then anyway!  Anyway, I'd add the Addictive Drums and the new UI of the X Series if I did manage the upgrade.  Just short on funds at the moment for this.
