CoffeeTime, your screenshot is showing that you don't have a playback timing master. That means you won't get playback (sound).
In your "playback and recording" page, set the driver mode to ASIO.
Next, in the "devices" page, make sure at least one device is selected for the input and output both, it should be called (ASIO4ALL *name of your soundcard input/output*). If some are greyed out that means they're either not connected or another device in the same list is already selected. You have to know which output you want to use, for example I don't know if your HDMI out is connected, that's usually a video port that could be going to your monitor or not be connected at all. You'll most likely want to use your regular mini jack output.
Finally, in the "recording and playback" page, make sure you have a recording timing master and a playback timing master. These should correspond to the devices you selected before.

This should get you sound if you open some default project and import a WAV file. The reason I asked about having audio in the project is because getting a softsynth to play sound from your keyboard is a whole different set of steps. You can't just start Sonar and play your keyboard and get sound. Perhaps you are already very aware of this, I just wanted to exclude the possibility of any errors there.

Hi Sanderxpander,

Thanks a lot. Which screenshot told you I do not have a Playback Timing Master please? Just to clarify: The drop down menu on the first shot (of the guy's video) in my last post is of the left hand button "None" - not the "Master" button, even though it looks like it could be attached to the "Master" button.

And the dropdown menus on my own screen are of the same left hand button. Apologies if you knew that - I just wanted to check.

By minijack do you mean the pink and green connectors for the headset and the single green connector for the speakers?

I did what you suggested for settings and they appeared to all be set as you said. Sorry if I have misunderstood. Here are the current settings:

No other available options:

This gives the only available option:

No, I wasn't aware. I thought I could play and hear music as soon as I installed!
I was naive but I am learning, thank you.

Are my settings correct at the moment? (I'm guessing not)

thanks

In the 2nd picture:

The first field shows Playback Timing Master says none. Click on that box and select whatever Asio4All driver is shown there. That should fix that issue. you get playback then.

The first screenshot where you reply to soundblend, in the audio "driver settings" page is showing no playback timing master. In the latest screenshot of the same screen, you again have no playback timing master, only a playback recording master. If you don't have a playback timing master, you can't have playback. Meaning no audio.

Furthermore, your "devices" screen is showing the only output device you have is the HDMI out. This is the HDMI video port on the back of your motherboard probably. And my guess is it's either connected to your monitor or not at all. In the ASIO4all control panel, you should be able to expand the selected active device (HD Audio or something) and see all its inputs and outputs. Make sure the regular output is selected and active (probably just called HD output or rear output or something, but likely not HDMI). Set up Sonar to use that output instead.

Forget midi for the time being by the way, everything there looks to be setup ok but we can't really test it effectively anyway until the audio is working.

OK, thanks both - I made the "None" now say ASIO4ALL...HDMI out 1:

Now it appears something has crashed - I know, I know:  "Get a decent sound card!" - But I have to say; I do have LOTS of stuff open at the moment, as I'm trying to sort this out. Ordinarily I won't need any other app running.

As well as the crash box in the following pic, the ASIO4ALL box has a red X with "HD Audio rear output" next to it.

On mouse rollover, it says (but disappears when I try to grab the screenshot!):
"INTERFACE
Out .....Hz 24 bits
Status: Unavailable!

> In use by another application?
> 'MS GS Wavetable Synth' enabled?"

OK the only place I have seen "wavetable thingy is in MiDI devices window, so I am still stumped.

I don't fully understand this paragraph I'm afraid because I don't know how to set it up to use that output instead.

I can read stuff in the ASIO4ALL window but cannot change anything, except I can only click it ON or OFF (which appears to not make any difference - I get the same message either way (in bold above).

Should I turn it on or off?

Also, I have made lots of changes suggested to me here on this thread. Should I be Restarting my PC every time I make a change for the changes to take effect? That would take some time, as it is already taking me about 30 mins just to make each post(!) as the forum won't let me upload pics directly (I am also dyslexic and have to proofread many times).

Where else can I enable the "HD Audio rear output" please?

thanks a lot

Thanks to Sanderxpander, we seem to have identified the problem as being not having a playback timing master. I did everything suggested, but nothing has fixed it.

I asked on another thread for help with buying a soundcard interface and have found one that looks ok.

But am I right in saying the "HD Audio rear output" problem I have now will still be an issue once I get the new sound card/ interface?

If so does anyone know how to fix this issue please?

thanks a lot

You should also try disabling the HDMI output in ASIO4ALL.
By having only one output soundcard, you make sure all the config is directed on this one..
HDMI output is only interesting if you mix on your TV.

yes thanks, I have been told that - I just don't know how to disable it!

Clicking the ASIO4ALL to check/uncheck - makes no difference.

I have tried EVERY combination in the Prefences windows. Seriously I have been on this all day, and I am climbing the walls!!!

Please tell me how to do it!

thanks

You are trying to run a Racecar with a Hamster... it isn't going to be pretty. It isn't going to work.

If you get a real sound card, your life becomes SO MUCH EASIER. I know because I did the same thing when I was starting out.

The good people on the sonar forum are helping as usual. I would suggest changing the title to this thread.
