  • [Answered] Any way to import more than one audio file at a time?

I have been given a song to mix that is 33 raw wave files on a DVD. Is there anyway to import them all in one shot onto tracks 1-33 without having to manually drag wave 1 from the browser to track 1? (repeat until all are loaded)
Thanks!

how about ctrl-selecting all and then dragging?

It should be as simple as File->Import->select multiple files->Open

Try starting a blank project with no tracks then go to File | Import | Audio... At this point you can navigate to any folder and select any number of audio files and import them. Separate tracks will be created for each audio file. One thing to look out for is if the files are coming from another DAW they may have a time-stamp on them (usually 1hr). Pro-Tools does this, kind of a long story but it goes back to the days of linear/tape editing. You can choose to not import files at time stamps by going to Preferences | Audio Data and uncheck "Always Import Broadcast Waves at Time Stamp"

I use File > Import > group select the waves in the Windows browser (Shift Click) and click OK or whatever the dialog button is. Sometimes you have to drag it to the start due to the Import at Original Time Stamp but that can be disabled in Preferences.

One time though I was importing an entire album worth of waves and they were all sorted by instrument so basically I had Kick (song 1), Kick (song 2), etc... Snare (song 1), Snare (song 2), etc through about a instruments over about 25 songs. I basically had to comb through it all one song/instrument at a time using Ctrl + Click in the windows dialog to get them to import the way I wanted. If I just imported them all at once each song got a new track for each instrument. I wanted each instrument to have one track and then each song had a clip on that track. By using Ctrl + Click to select all the waves for one song at a time I managed to get it to work. It was a real pain to figure out (and do) though especially considering some of the songs didn't incorporate all of the instruments. It did however work in the end.

That works if you're importing into a new blank project. If you're importing into an existing template you still have to import(drag) one file at a time.

....... unless someone knows another way?

I love setting up and using templates, so that's what I normally do for both recording and mixing projects.

You mean you want the waves to go into the tracks you've already set up? Yeah, not sure if there is a way around that...

Actually I just checked and there is an option to import directly to tracks. Select the Track(s) > Right Click > Import Audio. Now I'm not sure if there is a way to point the waves to the right tracks (I didn't want to start importing a bunch of crap into my project) but it's something look into. Cheers.

Thanks Beep! In the past I've tried every option I could find. Haven't check in X3, but I don't know how that would work where I want each wave in a specific track, ie vocals in lead or bg vox tracks, bass in bass di and bass amp tracks, etc.

I'll check where you suggested and see if I can make something work.

Thanks again!

Yeah I didn't look too closely but I didn't see an immediately apparent way to choose which files when where on multi-selected tracks. Still even if it has to be done for each track one at a time I kind of prefer that over the drag and drop import. That just kind of skeeves me out for some reason. I'll probably be doing this type of thing in the next few weeks so if I remember I'll post anything I find.
