  • speed comping and automatic track soloing in X3

F.r.a.n.k.
I'm trying to get to grips with speed comping in X3.  When I select a clip and turn on speed comping the comped track is automatically solo'd.  I'd actually prefer it not to be solo'd and just hear it in conjunction with the rest of the mix.  I know I can use dim solo, but I don't want to hear an attenuated version of the other tracks I just want to hear them exactly as they are in the mix.  I know I can also manually deselect solo on the comped track after I've gone into speed comp mode but the moment I move onto the next clip solo is automatically re-enabled.  This is driving me mad!

Is there a way of getting speed comping to NOT automatically solo the comped track?

Surely I can't be the only one who wants to work like this!

Select all other tracks and Ctrl+Shift+Solo one of them to enable solo override on all of them.

EDIT: Oops. Nevermind. Doesn't work. Interesting problem.

Thanks anyway for the suggestion brundlefly, and thanks for the Edited update, I had been trying your suggestion without any luck!  I find it's hard to believe it's just me who is struggling with this.  A zero db option on the dim solo gain in the preferences would be the obvious fix - but that ain't there!

That was my first thought, too, but the logic of that wouldn't be immediately obvious. Probably better to have a special Speed-Comping mode where auditioning doesn't mute other tracks.

Only workround I can think of is select the-6dB option in dim solo and then drop the comping track level by 6dB. That'd work wouldn't it?

Hmmm.  I actually thought Brundlefly's suggestion worked.  I know when I have done this I ran into the same problem as the OP but found a way to make it work.  I thought it was as simple as selecting all the tracks, but maybe there is more to it.  I can't recall my exact steps, but I will check when I get back to my studio tonight if not answer is found before then.

What is speed comp'ing

Brundelfly - I think I'll stick the zero db option on dim solo in as a feature request and see what happens.

FastBikerBoy - what you suggests does work and that is in fact what I'm doing at the moment.  It's just a faff to have to keep setting and unsetting the levels of the comped track and the master bus.

neirbod - if you do manage to throw more light on things I'd really appreciate it.

Grem - "what is speed comp'ing"; in x3, after you've got a few takes in take lanes, you can split it up into segments, select any one of the segments then hit shift + spacebar and playback will start with looping on that segment.  While it is looping you can use the up and down arrow to audition different takes, once you've found the one you are happy with then 'enter' will promote it to the comped track.  Forward and backward arrows will move you to adjacent segments to repeat the process.  It seems to have a lot of potential, unfortunately it goes ahead and solos the comped track for you and that particular 'feature' is driving me mad!

It took a little work to get my head around "speed comping", but once I started using it (after watching a video on implementation), I quite like it.
