Thanks for the replies.

But when I am comp'ing, I wanna hear the rest of the track too! Oh well, I'll give it a whirl and see. Maybe it's best this way.

I tried to find out how I did it before, but with no luck. Either I mis-remembered how I did it, or there was some change in X3c.

Regardless, I agree 100% that for speed comping to be effective we need some way to easily listen in the context of the other tracks. Why automatically solo at all?  If I want to solo a track I can do that easily. I would prefer that all tracks play by default just like normal behavior.

Huh... that's a weird way for them to set things. Is there not a setting in Preferences or the Track View Options to disable that?

One thing you could try is before a comping session multi select and solo the rest of the tracks. If they get unsoloed automatically maybe the Exclusive Solo option could be used somehow to keep them audible (but I've never used it and forget exactly how it functions but it's worth a look).

Cheers.

Using audition mode for speed comping relies on audition mode's solo (which it's always done).
We went above and added the dim solo option to let you hear in context.

If you fully want to hear in context, then use the mouse and click the segments you want while playing.  It's not quite as fast as the keyboard, but it's a way to accomplish what you're after.

Hi Keith,

This does work, but unless I am doing something wrong as soon as I select other tracks to hear I lose the ability to use the arrow keys to move among the takes/clips in the auditioned track.  It seems like a better solution would be to simply use the standard "rules" for soloing - if I want to hear just the auditioned track I can use the solo button on that track before I play back in audition mode.  Otherwise, I hear all the tracks that would play normally.  I would be curious to hear if others feel the current system is preferred for some reason, because I honestly don't see the benefit.

I don't know about it being preferred but when I'm trying to decide which take or part of a take I want to use it makes sense to me for everything else to be at a lowered volume or even muted.  The times I've used speed comping the dim solo was adequate for listening in context, I never even thought about wanting it louder.  That said I wouldn't be against an option to hear the other tracks at full volume.

Agree with everything here. In fact its sort of stopped me from using speed comping which could be great otherwise. 0db dim solo option fixes it very simply.

I personally like the way it automatically goes to exclusive solo while speed comping..to me thats the essence of the objective..

I have also used the dim solo so if its an easy fix to make a dim solo 0dB option, can i also have -24dB?.. :D

Same here... I guess it's a workflow/usage thing - I tend to comp while listening to the finer details of that track, so I want to hear it without a whole lot of anything else audible.   That said, a 0dB DimSolo would seem to be a simple option to cater to both sides.

I kind of never understood why the Dim Solo level can't be set at whatever level the user wants. I'm sure there is a reason (difficult to code?) but being able to set it at like -3.7db or -14.2db would be neat. Maybe even have a little fader in there and an audition feature so you can get the exact level you need. Even cooler would be having an easily hideable Dim Solo bus right after the Master in the Console so you could mess with it there without opening Preferences. Having it as a bus too could mean you could put limiters or other dynamic processors on it to tame the signal for the comping process if need be without having to mess with the actual mix.

Perhaps a bit extravagant but it'd be cool.
