  • Sonar X vs. its hostile environment (a crowd intelligence troubleshooting guide?)

I have been following the forum dilligently in the past few weeks and keep wondering how X3 can be so super-stable for many and just doesn't seem to work right for others, often being exactly opposite from the X2a experience. With every PC DAW being unique, it's a tough call to find the root of the evil and sometimes system fixes you attempt even make it worse ...

Hence, I wonder if we could put together some sort of troubleshooting guide i.e. a list of problems vs. solutions for everyone in the forum to browse and review in order to improve their system.

So please list which
  • system components
  • driver versions
  • urban legend system tweaks
  • 3rd party programs (plugins, backup / tuning software, freeware, etc.)
  • Sonar settings
have caused heartaches in form of performance issues and stability problems and how you detected it and eventually fixed it.

I'll throw in some of my experiences in a minute ...

Request: pls don't hijack this thread with your particular still unsolved problems ... only post if you actually found the source and the fix.

Thanks.

Problem: random Sonar freezing and crashes
Fix: remove the only 32 bit plug used in project
Detected by luck as I was sure I don't use any 32 bit plugs anymore (X3 plug color coding now helps to distinguish 32bit and 64bit!)

Problem: nVidia graphic card caused latency and hence audio drop-out
Fix: driver updates and card settings could not fix it; replaced by $30 ATI card
Detected with LatencyMon

Problem: Sonar starts performing poorly after 8 hrs without problem
Fix: scheduled system task started in background => disable scheduled tasks (or re-schedule to other time)
Detected because it happened right at midnight

Hello FreeFlyBertl,
Thanks for taking the initiative in this useful effort. Could we also separate and /or identify software versus hardware issues? For example, list hardware that is known to cause stability problems and others that are known to render satisfactory results?
I think having hardware that do not makes Sonar happy might be one of the most difficult problems to detect and also very frustrating since sometimes you find them after heavy software tweaks.
Thanks again.

Hi CCR

That's part of the idea behind this thread (although not explicitly said). Pls, also list hardware and drivers that caused problems, how you could identify the troublemaker and what you did to fix it. Be brief and if there's information in another thread, just link it.

So hopefully a few posts down the road one can read through this like "ok, checked that ... and that ... and hey I haven't tried that yet" and in case of more detailed info required just follow links or PM whoever found the fix.

Thanks in advance to all who chime in and share their experiences

Rob

I had that problem using the VC-64 32 bit.....I love the plug but using it makes Sonar freak out so to speak..LOL I wish they would make it a 64 bit plug as it is so useful, to me anyway!

Is this something you snagged from my persistent problems and my thread, or perhaps from your own experience? While I agree with this, this truly isn't a fix. Buying an ATI card over an nVidia card is a little extreme; although right now, I am considering it!

It appears that the 64 bit audio engine may case problems with some PC modules and or plugins. Until a fix is issued turning it of may prove effective.

The V-64 was developed by a company that no longer is in business. There has been much talk about others wishing it would get updated to 64bit. But that just doesn't appear to be likely.

I love the sound of this plug also! Haven't had a problem with it yet.

I  only posted problems/fixes from personal experience. This happened a little while ago (between X2 and X2a) but I reckon would still be the case. Drove me nuts trying to tweak that nVidia card without success until somebody on the forum suggested to order a cheap ATI and stop wasting time. I can dig out the actual make of that non-functional card if it is of any interest, but it was one of the inexpensive nVidias ...
