  • I forget... Is there a "Smooth Scrolling" Now Time option?

I can't remember if there is an option for this or if I'm just remembering this behavior from my old system. Basically I'd like to set things so the project views (Clips Pane, PRV, etc...) move along with the Now Time marker instead of jumping a page ahead once it reaches the end of the screen. It seems I have forgotten a lot of things in my down time. :-/

Thanks in advance.

Okay, just poking around the manual and some of my notes and I think I already went through this before to find that this option is not available in Sonar. If this is indeed the case I'd like to propose a feature request for this and perhaps some more advanced Now Time marker options.

The particular behavior I am referring to is basically this...

1) Start Playback
2) The screen will remain unchanged until the Now Time Marker reaches the center of the current view.
3) Once the Now Time Marker reaches the center of the current view it remains centered and the view scrolls smoothly to the right as the project plays back.

This is particularly helpful when zoomed all the in on something you want to audition for editing. It lets you keep an eye on the data as the section plays instead of jumping to the next section where your eyes (and brain) have to dart around trying to find the problem area.

This works well in conjunction with combinations of the Rewind On Stop function enable/disabled. Basically if it is disabled then once you get to the problem area you can stop playback and that spot is centered on screen. If you have to scroll around to center the area when you are zoomed in it is difficult to be precise... especially if that spot has already jumped offscreen. Of course there is the option of center zooming on that point with the absolutely excellent (IMO) Time Ruler zoom but it is an extra step.

If I am completely mistaken and there is a smooth scrolling option please point me in the right direction as it will really help my editing workflow.

This is not a complaint... it is a question/suggestion.

Don't flame me, bro. ;-)

I agree...I really would prefer smooth scrolling. It's so natural when I'm editing audio in Sound Forge, that when I go back to Cakewalk the jumps from screen to screen are always a bit jarring.

+1 smooth scrolling feature request

It does seem like smooth scrolling is overdue. Maybe at one point it was considered too much of a resource hog, but enough people are rocking high powered DAW's these days to at least make it an option. I think the full version of Pro Tools has smooth scrolling. Anyway it annoys me most in the PRV when I'm trying to visually track notes as they're playing. Even though I know the screen jump is coming up, it always throws me and I have to realign my eyes with the notes.

I would pay good money for that option.  Smooth scrolling used to be possible by holding down a certain key.  but unfortuately, it didn't work in PRV or SV.  For that reason it wasn't that uselful.  being able to turn it off is a must, but I say let's ALL put in a feature request and gget then ASAP.

Okay, so I'm not crazy. I didn't realize this was a resource issue but yeah, that seems like it wouldn't be such a problem these days. It's funny though because my old system is a complete joke compared to this one (although it was very nice at one point) and I never had any problems. I guess I got kind of spoiled by and/or accustomed to some of the features on that DAW even though it is very basic and rudimentary compared to Sonar X series.

I will be trying to be more proactive in regards to feature requests instead of just pontificating here so hopefully the Bakers don't view that as an attack. I just want to help. I'm sure something like this would be difficult to code as it's probably embedded deep into the core of the program but it would be pretty sweet IMO.

And Sharke... PRV editing is exactly what I'm doing right now and why I brought it up but I do find myself getting tripped up in the Track View as well. I didn't realize I had picked up so many habits/preferences from my old days of hackery.

I'm going to try and be more proactive about feature requests and problem reports than I have been now that I understand the program a little better. Hopefully they aren't construed as complaints. I just want to help because I think Sonar could very well become top dog easily if they wanted to. Considering how this current release is looking perhaps in a few years we'll be the "industry standard". ;-)

I agree.

I would love to be able to view the notes that are about to be triggered, especially with complex orchestral programming

again, I do think the is a key trigger for smooth scrolling. does anyone know what it is?

Pre-X series it used to be holding down the 'G'-key. Dunno if it's still in there somewhere...
