I've been complaining about the loss of these buttons, too! I used them all the time and, I really miss them. I hate keyboard commands!
If you have a fairly large screen, it might be possible to use an onscreen virtual keyboard to send keyboard shortcuts with clicks of the mouse. I just tried the one that comes with Win7 and it works for the simple stuff like the screen set numbers and the one letter shortcuts. It did disappear on me once in my quick trial though.
A better solution might be
this one but it isn't free (30$). Seems pretty flexible and at least one of the example keyboards looks pretty small. I imagine this one can be programmed to send any key combination/sequence.
I don't think this would work well for functions that require you to hold a key down while moving the mouse. For instance, using the Win7 virtual keyboard and pressing J for jog works as far as activating the jog with a click to the J, but you can't turn it off (doesn't make sense but that's what it does).
Someone mentioned today the situation where you've got guitar in hand and keyboard shortcuts are awkward. A virtual keyboard may be the answer. I just searched quite a bit and am a bit surprised that no one seems to have made a small clickable button pad with programmable keyboard shortcuts assigned to each button. There was one that looked promising but it was only for Mac.
