Another new improved version posted...
https://axiology.bandcamp.com/track/opportunity-2 Tom,
Thanks for your input.
I was hoping not to get into too much editing of timing of individual drum hits. The drum track was created using 2 or 3 16 bar jazz improv sequences from the Jazz EZX in Superior Drummer. The sequences are not quantized. Looking at individual notes - there's a fair amount of variation in timings. I think the sequences in SD are created from real drummers performances. I originally copied and pasted snare and tom licks, deleted/muted some hits but not much input of individual notes, except to tame the bass drum which was too busy.
I do see what you mean, perhaps some errors where made while copying and pasting. As well not so much a matter of timing but the drums had to fit well with the phrasing of the vocals. So I spent couple of long evenings editing, largely in the intro, verses and the bit between the 1st and 2nd verse, and the outro which uses the same chord progression.
I've largely left the drums in the solos after the second and third verses alone except to boost the velocities of the snare and tom stuff to give it a more punchy drive. No way I want to get into adjusting timing of hits in those sections, except for the bass drum - it would be a nightmare and probably no improvement, althoughI have adjusted velocities and muted some hits in there. I played the guitar to fit the drums in those bits, it's usually the other way round. I almost came to the point of shortening the last solo section, removing the 16 bars of chaotic drums there, but I really liked that bit of drumming and if it was to work I had to come up with guitar and bass bits that fitted the drums, so subsequently I'm pleased with the way it turned out.
Thanks everybody whose listened, and for your comments.
The guitar solo stuff is all pretty much composed and not improvised, it took me over a month of work to do the guitars. The solos being relatively long, I can't just be aimlessly noodling in there. I'd love to be practiced enough to play like that off the cuff.
