Has there been any official announcement yet on a procedure for downloading our installation and plugin files so that they may be backed up yet?

I'm concerned that they will just abandon ship without removing things like Sonar installation limits and also authorization codes and the like. If there is no longer a Cakewalk, then I should be able to install my version of Sonar on as many of my own laptops as I need to. I also shouldn't be asked for things like authorization codes and little complications like that upon installation to a new machine.

What would be nice is to be able to download all my Sonar installation files and serial numbers and then be able to make a few backup CDs for posterity.

Why this is not a sticky right now I don't know as it would stop a lot of speculation.

There are a lot of threads going over this topic daily. This one will answer you questions.

It's true , nothing comes up in a search. I tried to find the FAQ and gave up, I had to dig through a few threads because I remember scook posting the link. I found it as you can see,  but it took digging. It's always been that way here. It would seem only scook can find anything. I don't know where he will end up but I'm following him where ever that forum is.

Just go ahead and do it!  I completed downloading everything that I have in my account, and I also created a document that contains all of the authorization codes etc.  It takes a while and is by no means fun, but at least now I have all of the installers located (and backed up) and all of the serial numbers/codes that I might need to authorize in the future.  None of this will be as easy as the CC was but you never know what will happen with Gibson.

Best of luck getting it done!

I tried over the weekend and ran into some issues. The first thing I didn't understand was the little links that say "Download mirror 1 & Download mirror 2" ... These links appear on our product tab of the cakewalk control panel right under the name of each product in the list. Not sure what that refers to.

But the weirdest part was that Parts 2 & 3 of Sonar X3 installation files wouldn't download. They are showing network error in the browser. They say Failed - Forbidden. There are four main parts to the actual app plus several support bundles. I couldn't get the middle two ... parts 2 & 3.

I had only made it to Sonar X3 Producer and would like to continue using that app. Is that not possible? Or rather, if it is, whom would I reach out to to get this corrected? I also would like to get X1 & X2 downloaded as well just in case I am using any of the support apps from that. For instance, I love V-Vocal and that either came via X1 or X2. You have to have installed one of those apps to even have access to V-Vocal and would like to continue using that as long as possible. I never took to Melodyne.

Anybody else have these issues with downloading?

"Mirrors" are just alternate server sites.  It's their way of spreading the load so if traffic gets too heavy, you have another source for the download.

Sometimes mirrors download speeds are actually faster - especially when the main server is getting slammed with heavy traffic, slowing it down.  Also mirrors are handy if there's a problem with the main server (As appears to be in your case.  Just jump onto a mirror!).

Of course this strategy assumes that those applications which require more than simply entering the serial number to activate will still have access to the activation server after the account and download servers are defunct. I understand the intention of the Cakewalk team to honor their promise to provide a backdoor activation scheme that will allow SONAR (and possibly some other applications) to activate in perpetuity without the need for online activation or the generation of a new activation file for new machines, but I am frankly a bit skeptical. Unless that backdoor has already been coded into all the old stuff as an Easter egg to be revealed at some point in the future, who is going to pay to have the code modified, who is going to notify existing users of how it is being implemented, who is going to distribute the modified code, who is going to sign off on the effective change in licensing needed to make available a freely transportable (effectively cracked) application, which will no longer be enforced by an account holder mechanism? The coders at Cakewalk are not the owners of the product, and in the event that Gibson goes into receivership, no one may have the authority to devalue the property, even if the Gibson management feels an obligation to their customers to keep abandoned software that is not generating new income working.
