  • Extremely Specific Guitar EQ Question - RealGuitar and EQ

OK, this is pretty specific.  In the Celemony video on doubling vocals (linked below), I like the EQ of the acoustic guitar because it is not too bright or harsh.  How would you EQ RealGuitar to get a similar sound?  You can hear the guitar throughout the video, but it is soloed at about 3:19.

By the way, I liked the guitar better before they doubled it because it sounded more natural—but the EQ is the question.

Thanks.

[Edit] I just realized you were talking about RealGuitar, not a real guitar :) Well, maybe the advice below will be useful for those using real guitars who want to get that sound...I haven't used RealGuitar yet because I play guitar!

Hard to say without knowing what the signal sounds like going into the EQ. Overall it's a relatively bright sound, but it could be a humbucker with a lot of EQ, a bridge single coil with less EQ, etc. Take off some of the low end and add some upper mids to start, but a lot will depend on your pickup choice and the pickup technology that was used. It also sounds to me like there's some chorusing in play from notes that are played in real time being mixed with the delayed notes.

How do you know that EQ was used, Konrad?

Craig, Thanks very much.  I actually get (what I think) are really good sounds with RealGuitar, usually with nothing more than a little high-pass and sometimes some air (high shelf); however, the particular sound in this video is a bit different and I like it.

I played actual acoustic guitar on 1,000s of records over the years but due to a hand injury I can only play well enough now for writing.  (I was a keyboard and drum machine session player who could also lay down pretty solid acoustic rhythm parts).  RealGuitar really makes it easy to get good strummed guitars.  For solo lines and finger-picking, I use RealGuitar, Acoustic Legends HD, Fab Four, and some other things.

John, I don't know if any EQ was used, but I do know that RealGuitar sounds different so I was curious what it would take to transform RealGuitar into that sound.  I was just hoping someone had better EQ skill than me.  I can hear very subtle differences but it often takes me a long time to find the right EQ band to do what I want.  No worries.

You can try the Quad Curve EQ analyzer and up on top you can see the keyboard. If you can figure out what chords they are playing, then you know what notes are being used. Use the keyboard in the QCEQ to use as a reference starting point. IOW if it's a d chord, use the eq on RealGuitar to eq those frequencies and see if that's what your looking for.

Not sure if I am being clear here, but if you know waht chord is played, then you know what freq's to start with. Just an idea OTTOMH.
