When I record anything, there will usually be a bar or 2 of silence at the beginning and perhaps a few seconds after a fade.
 
At the moment when I Select All/Export the finished mix, I then load it into Cool Edit Pro and trim the wav down to the bit I actually want.
 
Is there any way to automate the export so I don't need to do this?  Like setting a start and end point on the ruler or something?
 
I currently use Sonar 8 and X2.

When selecting tracks to export also select a time range to export. The Select menu functions are one way to specify the time range to export.

Yeah, I thought of that, but I want something more automatic.
 
What I've just started doing is putting a marker at the start and end points and then doing "select all, go to start marker, F9, go to end marker, F10, export".
 
It's just a bit long winded, thought there might be an easier option.

This is exactly what I do. Once the start and end markers have been set it's easier, more precise and more consistent than subsequently trimming silence with an editor. It sure beats scrubbing and razor blades, the method I grew up with. Over time, the sequence of keystrokes has become so automatic I don't even think about it anymore.
 
Some folks have used programmable keyboards to automate such sequences. I considered that approach at one time, but decided it wasn't worth the bother.
