  • Old Roland D5 keyboard - .ins instrument definition file?

I have an old Roland D-5 keyboard that I want to use with Sonar 8.5.  The existing instrument definitions in Sonar do not include the D5.  The Cakewalk website FAQ's point to two sites for .ins files, but neither site has one for the D-5.  Google turns up nothing.  I found a roland.ins file that contains definitions for many Roland keyboards, but not the D5.

Does anyone know of a source for the .ins file for the D-5?

I use the D-5 as one of my controllers - I dont think there are .ins files for it but I think there are D-20 files which should be compatable - dont quote me on that..

Really though you would probabaly be better of using it as a controller for softsynths - Those patches on the D-5 are pretty mediocre... TTS 1's patches are probably better ...

Go to cakewalknet.com and download the instrument file for Roland (various instruments). It has the D-50 in it which should be similar. Its a plain text file, so you can easily edit it. I have some instructions on my website on how to make an INS file.

Thanks to both of you. I will check out the D50 and D20 definitions.  I also heard that the D-110 matches up pretty well to the D5 definitions.  If I need to define a file from scratch I will use Dave's FAQ link.

D K, I agree the D5's sounds are not very good, but there is one patch I used for a song I sequenced a long time ago (in the early- to-mid 90's) that decided to work on again.  One particular D5 patch I used in that sequence fit well and I haven't found a good substitute in my soft synths.

I was going to suggest that. IIRC, the D20 was a keyboard based on the D-110 sound module, and the D5 was a D20 with some controller features deleted (and maybe a smaller keyboard?), but using the same sound module.

The D-110's not all bad. You can listen to some examples of it on my Soundclick page:

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_music.cfm?bandID=757783

Both "Miles to Go" and "Café" are all D-110 except for the E.P.s.

The main complaint I got on "Café" was that the kick and crash were wimpy... which they are.

The definition file for the D50 is already included in list supplied by Cakewalk, if that's of any use to you.

Hey guys,

the D-50 has nothing to do with the D-5. Except for the letters ...

You can find an ins-file for D-5 here: http://www.rolandus.com/support/downloads_updates/eula.php?FileName=D5FACT.zip

Best Regards

This is true.

You can find an ins-file for D-5 here: http://www.rolandus.com/s...eName=D5FACT.zip

This is a SYSX file containing the factory patch parameter data. It does not contain an Instrument Definition File (.INS) that SONAR can use to map the patches.

Thanks, Ludvig.  I downloaded the .zip file from your link, but it contains a .syx file rather than a .ins file.

Edit:  just noticed that the previous poster already pointed that out.

Ooops. Sorry for misleading you. Found it on this page: http://www.rolandus.com/support/downloads_updates/general_apps.php
It sure did look like it was going to be an .ins-file :-)

Guess you'll have to create your own then. The pachnames are all in the manual wich can be found here:
http://media.rolandus.com/manuals/D-5_OM_PLAY.pdf
http://media.rolandus.com/manuals/D-5_OM_EDIT.pdf

Good luck!
