Well perhaps I am in the stone age but I don't have Reason and I was wondering what benefits the new 64 bit Rewire support would have for me. This is not at all a sarcastic question. I am ignorant and would like to know about things I can do that I may be unaware of now.  Perhaps chaining some software together I already have that I could not do before.

Anyone with experience in this area care to share some knowledge for the curious? Thanks in advance.

up until now, you haven't been able to use rewire in 64 bit X1. It doesn't sound like you've missed it though :). Same here - the only rewire device that I use with Sonar is Melodyne and that works fine(ish) as a plug-in.

Obviously it will not benefit you at all if you don't Rewire anything or don't use software that acts as a Rewire slave.

It offers real-time synchronization, midi and 64 channels of audio between two capable apps. otherwise.

Basically using Sonar as a host it allows you to use a Rewire equipped application much like you would a multi-out VST.

Reason and Live are both popular used via Rewire as are many full-blown notation packages.

I guess the only immediate thing I could think of in my setup would be if I could use it for Geist but I am not sure if that is even possible. So many people seemed to have wanted it so badly I felt like I must be missing something. Maybe I still am but I just am ignorant on this.

Well,  I'm not sure how this will work,  but i'm hoping that 64bit rewire will work with a notation program.....so I can have really cool notation and see a workable score to compose music with.

99.9999% of my music is done in a DAW box,  but I really long for the opportunity to use a real string ensemble, or Orchestra or whatever.  And having the 2 programs interact would save HOURS of busy time.

So that's what I'm hoping 64bit rewire will work for me.  Turns out MusicXML has its drawbacks.

 

from what i understand, FL is on the verge of offering a fully x64 version. once that happens, i will probably begin using it again here and there, and to rewire that into Sonar would be cool

you can use x32 FL Studio as plugin in Sonar x64. Same benefits... and rewire slave live x32 to FL Studio plugin...

Rewire is a communication protocol allowing you to 'wire' up two compatible applications.  In use, adding a Rewire capable app. is similar to how you'd add a multi-output capable VSTi synth and it then makes that app. behave something like Kontakt for example where you can simultaneously send several tracks of midi out to it and recieve up to 64 channels of audio back all from within Sonar.  It's a very flexible set-up.

If you are needing a bridge in 64 bit Sonar to run a 32bit slave app. then you may as well just use the 32 bit version of Sonar anyway.

The only native way to use Rewire in Sonar currently is to use the 32 bit version with a 32 bit slave application.  64 bit Rewire will allow communication between Sonar 64 bit another 64 bit app. such as Reason 6.

Ableton Live - Rewire Solution Using Sonar X2, or greater:
I experienced severe Audio degradation using Sonar rewire with Ableton Live 9 as sound source.  The sounds of Ableton are very much worth using in many cases but did not sound the same through Sonar Rewire. I believe i found one of the problems. 
In Sonar X2, > you might try these steps:
1. selecting under Edit/Pref. /Audio/ Playback and Recording - select "share drivers with other programs". 
2. When Ableton Rewire instrument is created be sure and create as many dedicated "MIDI" channel tracks as will be accessed in Abelton Live.
Be sure each midi track in Sonar is set to its appropriate midi channel, example: midi ch 1 -8, not Omni. (THIS possibly alleviates a phase problem in the rewire Set-up by over-riding the global ch 1 and creating Instrument channels (even with a common stereo audio output.)
3. In Ableton Live - likewise assign midi tracks for Sonars purposes.
WHEN i did these things the stereo image was greatly improved!
