Hi, I'm trying to record the output of NI Reaktor. The signal is constant and I want to record 10 mins or so for editing. There is no record button on the synth track and I don't seem to be able to route the output of the synth track to an audio track. Likewise I can't route the output of a bus to an audio track. Am I missing something here ? I could have sworn I did this sort of thing in earlier versions, in fact I'm pretty sure some of my projects depended on it.

Does the device have a line out? If so connect that to your interface and record that channel.
 
Or you could record the MIDI performance (which I'm assuming is what you are currently hearing on playback) then bounce the MIDI track to audio or freeze the synth.

Oh and to record MIDI input like that I think all you have to do is make sure the MIDI Input Echo button on the track is on and hit record (global record in the Transport Module). I think that's how it works... I'm not at my DAW though.
 

So...
1. you can record the midi track by clicking on the red record enable button on the midi track.
2. You can send the synth output to an audio track, but you CANNOT record enable that audio track (you can just listen to it).
3. You cannot send bus outputs back to a track and record the bus output.
4. You can bounce to tracks in real time while playing your synth but you can't tweak synth properties while you do this.
5. You can send your audio output to an out on your interface and loop it back into the interface Inputs and then record the inputs (watch out for feedback loops when doing this).

Here are two methods
 
1) route the synth audio through the audio interface and back to another track in SONAR
 
2) use a recorder plug-in like HGS Wav Recorder and import the result into another track.

Oh... I thought this was a hardware unit. I don't understand why you can't just bounce the track to audio.

That would work if input monitoring is not necessary.

Thanks for your responses. I've found a solution by routing through my sound cards mixer (EMU0404). Have to say I'm uncomfortable with this because although latency is not an issue in this situation, I can imagine many where it would be. I'm interested in the following answer from gswitz:

I'd be grateful if you could tell me roughly how to do this.
I'm tempted to install an old version to see if this functionality has been removed. Can anyone remember if this used to be there. Not being able to route tracks onto others seems absurd and might tempt me to switch back to an earlier version.

Select the track
Select the a time frame (one way is click drag the time line)
Bounce the track

As far as routing to other tracks I don't think that's been possible in any of the X series and I've never seen it mentioned in regards to earlier versions.
 
Sure you weren't using another DAW? That seems to be the more traditional way of routing like in PT and Reaper.
 
Would be nice if we had that. I'd also like it if Sonar could accept the audio output of other applications (like media player or a browser window) as an input source.
 
In regards to latency there are many ways around that. Freeze all the other tracks or create a stereo mixdown on a new track (within the project) to play over and archive everything else temporarily.
