I just got an email from Native Instruments titled something like "Native Sketches" or some such.  The gist of it was that NI had "challenged" some 24 "artists" to come up with short (under a minute or so) "musical" sketches using only the sounds from Komplete.  I'm not sure you had to do instrumentals only but none of the 16 or so I made it through used any "singing" on them although one did use some samples of their toddler babbling and cooing.

It was a disturbing and depressing experience. And something I wish I could...but know I can't un-hear.

First, while there were a couple of folks who actually had some sort of recognizable groove or "melody like thing" most all were just noise collages of one sort or another running the gamut from A to...well...A.

Second, all of these "artists" had bios of sorts proclaiming their veracity in claiming such a title.

Third, who listens to this drek??  Most of it was no better than putting a few noise makers in the hands of toddlers and letting them go to town.

Fourth, who listens to this drek??

Honest, who?????????

(I mean other than me, who was stupid enough to make it all the way to number 17 before throwing in the towel)

I was wondering where that towel came from.

I just deleted the email, without clicking on the link.

I knew what to expect and myolpal just confirmed it. Thanks.

The modern definition of music is as broad as the modern definition of family. I'm told it's progress.

What's the modern definition of progress?

I think you mean, "contemporary producers", not artists :|^)

As a sucker for self-inflicted punishment, I decided to rise to the 'obvious challenge'.

But first, so we're all clear, a definition!

'Contemporary':

"living or occurring at the same time, belonging to or occurring in the present"

So, basically, it means sweet bugger all other than they are not dead yet.

So, short pieces of music made by undead people using "only instruments and effects from KOMPLETE 11", i.e. pretty much every musical sound that ever existed.

On to the impartial review section!

Pile of crap.  Unless there was a hidden requirement to make the sounds as unpleasant and 'edgy' to listen to as possible, in which case, fine work!

So after reading this, me being me, instead of just ignoring the email like I normally would I now had to listen to them to see what was up.

I didn't hear anything particularly disturbing about them. My biggest issue was many were repetitive and didn't seem to go anywhere, but they might have made nice enough intros.

And there was one that I would've liked to hear Miles playing on top of.

I've heard far worse things...
