I’m wanting to put sonar on my desktop. I’ve had it on my laptop since platinum was released. I plan to continue to us it. I would like to copy all my projects audio and info from my laptop to the desktop as well. Both are win 7 64bit. How could I go about this? I’m upgrading my desktop from 4g ram to 16g. I feel my workflow would be much faster on the desktop to get my projects finished in case something “happens” with sonar. (Hope not)

Another question is am I in a “safer” position with win 7 as far as future updates altering sonars software inoperable??

Lastly,
Has anybody noticed sonar changed the main page??
It no longer has the “nice doing business with you for 30 years, have a nice life” (thanks for letting us stick it to you on the lifetime lingo)

I found that strange.. really hope Sonar stays alive and moves on from this. I really don’t wanna switch and relearn processes and new software in general.

Yes, you can legitimately install SONAR on two computers.

Thanks bitflipper.
Can you point me in a direction how I would move my complete projects to the new computer? Audio, settings, midi, data etc.. Will it move them as they are? For example most of my final projects tracks are frozen. Would they remain that way once moved?

I have it on 7 , all say they are legal. There is no 2 computer rule, there is only the fact that you get 2 installs of certain VST's like AD2. The rule is that only YOU can use the software.

Yes, yes and Yes.
Project data is stored with project files. So if they were frozen in your project they will be frozen on a new pc. only thing is different is the Sonar installed on a new PC. Sonar looks for Midi, audio track data in the working projects folder so just move your projects folder/or projects to new pc with all project files intact.

The thing you want to be most concerned with is making sure you have 3rd party plug ins installed in same directory's. sonar will find them but sometimes when they are in a different location Sonar will have a brain fart moment.

I use 2 methods of working between my 3 machines.
I have an upstairs Studio DAW where I do my recording, a Downstairs editing and mastering DAW and a laptop.
Method 1-  external 1TB HD
Method 2-  a cloud service- One Drive.

All my projects are in their own folders and those folders are inside an "album" folder.
On all machines I have a Sonar Data drive ( partition on my laptop) and Sonar is set to "open" there looking for Projects.
So all I need to do is drag and drop my project folders to the External drive or save as to One Drive.
Then drag and drop those to the second machines Sonar Data Drive.
When I do this I often date the Folder so as to keep track of where my most up to date stuff is. This is were One Drive is better.  as everything is automatically in sync.

I always use the FILE menu for opening projects. I set Sonars Pathways to go directly to my Data drive.

When you open those projects they should be more or less identical to the versions on your other machine.
What's important is to have all the same VST's and Plug ins. My 2 desktops have everything loaded and licenced.

Another thing is to have 2 similar audio interfaces or use the same one for both. Using a radically different interface, or worse, none at al,l upsets Sonar and you'll have a bunch of dialog box warnings happening.
My 2 interfaces work without issue and the projects open on both computers with out a hiccup.

I set up the downstairs DAW so as not to abandon my wife at night. It's in a family room. She's used to hearing the same song over and over :) I don't record, I only edit stuff and experiment with VST's and plug ins.
So instead of the external drive I thought I'd use One drive. Works like a charm. No more worries about which is the newest version.
It also gives me an off site back up of my work.
I did learn not to try and record audio directly to one drive. It crashes. I use "save as" to create a local file and use that. When done I just use "save as" again to one drive.
I am going to set up an on site shared Hard drive via my router and CAT 5 system someday.

If your projects are not properly stored in one folder then you can easily fix this by opening them one at a time and using "save as" to the external drive and make sure to tick the "copy audio with project" box.

Regardless of how many computers you can physically install SONAR on, legally you are only allowed to install it on 2 according to the EULA. So if you are going to continue to flagrantly, and nigh on boastingly disregard, and therefore violate the EULA, . . . well . . . I hope you don't come down on people who choose to use a cracked version, . . . .might be a little hypocritical

I only use one computer, but since I paid for a lifetime of updates that only lasted a year I wonder why I load SPLAT on every computer I see. It seems like honesty runs on a one way street. There has been an admirable amount of decency from our members, not so much from Gibson.

I should have been nervous when Gibson bought Cakewalk. When I bought my 335 in 2013 it took 8 months and 4 guitars before one from the factory worked.
