Im trying to get my 808 and microsynth to run into sonar x2 and cant figure it out. purchased two roland um-one midi cables so i can plug them into my comp. new with the whole software thing and just kinda lost. also does any one know of a good way i can run them both at same time for live feeds. Thanks

Can you be more specific about what you wish to do with an MC-808?..
 
For example, If you connect the MC-808 via midi to your computer you can:
 
In the MC-808
go into system>sequencer; set sync mode = slave
 
In Sonar
Preferences > Midi > Devices; enable both input and output for your midi connection to the MC-808
Preferences > Project > Midi ; check "send midi start/continue/stop/clock"
Preferences > Project > Midi ; check "midi sync output ports" for the port to your MC-808
 
With this setup
1. your mc-808 will run locked to the Sonar clock and respond to sonar start/stop etc
2. you can use any midi input or create midi source data in Sonar and use the MC-808 as a sound generator
3. you can record MC-808 patterns into Sonar (provided you enable ext seq out per part in MC-808)
 
then, connect the MC-808 via audio to your interface and you can record your MC-808 into a Sonar project.
 
Use a similar approach for your synth...

Are your MIDI cables 5 pin or USB? If they are 5 pin MIDI cables, you need to have an audio interface that has 2 5 pin MIDI Inputs and if you want Sonar to communicate with your 2 MIDI devices, 2 5 pin MIDI outs. Or if one of your MIDI devices has a MIDI though, you can get away with having only one MIDI in and out on your audio interface.

that worked! but now no sound through comp. do i still need the speakers hooked to my hardware? im really trying to use my comp as the " mixer" to where everything runs through it

If you wish to use the computer as a mixer you will need a multi-input audio I/o card.. but you can just use a mixer (I assume you already do..)
 
I had success previously with a Tascam lm8-ST which is a 1u rack, 2 bus mixer with 8 stereo sets of inputs.. use one bus for recording, and the other bus for monitoring...so can have everything playing while you record the synth of your choice, but any soild mixer will do that (just take more desk space).
 
multi channel audio Interface is the way to go though.. I currently have a motu 828 mk III hybrid, and while it was $750, has been worth every penny.

my midi is a 5 pin to usb. it is the roland um-one cable that they told me should work

it shows the audio being read through the meters but no actual sound
