Hi Jan,

Nice song that, and good mix, as best as I can tell on my KRK's. Love the strong vocals from Jennifer.

Just one thing I may have picked up at around 2:23 is, on the word "cannot" I think there is either an artefact or something, almost as though a spit shield wasn't used. Perhaps someone else could check this out and confirm?

cheers

Hi and thank's for the comment Andy

It is true that there's a glitch in 2:23, my friend tried to mix this tune and he most likely forgot to take off an compressor
or limiter on the vocal track so i got that track and it is clipping, he will probably send me a new vocal rendering
and i will redo the whole mix from scratch, cause the strings is a bit bright and loud
also i am not satisfied with the piano, and the mix of the instruments, and maybe there's
a tad to much ( pre ) send delay on the vocal, even if the whole song is simple
there seems that's it is to much going on.. IMO.

I sat up all night, and got tired ears.. hard to be an amateur " mixing engineer ", ehhhh.

Instruments is all midi and VSTi's from within sonar, i need to do a better job here.
Yes Jennifer is a great singer, technically and in voice.

I got sonar platinum, i tried to fast bounce, but that gave me vocals first and then the instruments
came in all to late, like 6-8 seconds after or more.. playing fast... don't know if anyone has noticed this ?
so i rendered it without fast bounce, that worked. I always use the 64 bit rendering engine and
24 bit, 44.1 khz in my " project's ".

I did not have that issue with X3, maybe the audio engine need a tad more overhaul still ?
Also encountered more " crackles " in the sound to with it !
i have the latest version of Platinum, and updates.

( Note , i did reinstall the whole computer earlier and only have Sonar platinum installed now. ) so all should be good.

Please do critical comments , that will help me forward in mixing , thanks

This is a terrific song, and all the performances are very good.  My only crit is the piano sample.  I've heard better samples that sound like the piano is more woodlike than this one.  I know it's difficult to find the perfect piano unless you have a large sample library.  That is all I hear, but I do like this song.  Best of luck in the remix;  I look forward to hearing it.

Thanks for confirming that Jan, and for the insight to your production

It is indeed hard work LOL, when, for some of us, the art of mixing does not come naturally.

I'm listening again and I can see where Lynn is coming from regarding the piano sample. I'm wondering if perhaps a bit more time on examining each note played and seeing if minute velocity changes would help with that.

Lynn
I look forward to hearing it.

Same here, this is a strong song that warrants some attention

Thank's for your comment Lynn.

The VSTi i have for piano is, Truepiano ( for real piano ), but i find it hard to get the sound i want too.
One way is to EQ it, but still then i am not satisfied, there's something strange happening no matter how i EQ it
it will not quite sound as a "real piano".

The midi track of the piano is very static , it is played by my friend, and like me he is not, a "keyboard player"
the whole track is qantize'd, so there will be a lot of work to " Humanize " it.
Should be an function to " humanize " it in sonar, without loosing any notes, i don't know if that's possible ?
i have tried "groove quantize" but that's not working, so i guess the solution is to adjust every note
that will be a huge work, just for that piano track.

Then for the Cello  / soft strings, i have SI string section, for  "real strings ".
Of course there's D pro, rapture, Cakewalk sound center and so forth , stock vsti's
i have not searched a lot of the sounds there, but what i have tried, is not what i am looking for.
so i am not sure what to do... It is only 3 midi tracks, then 1 vocal.

If you guy's have some ideas, i certainly need some help, cause i want this song as good it i can mix it.

Thank's

Hi Jan,

I know there are a few discussions about this subject in one of the other forums, so it may be worth doing a search on that. When I decide I need to humanise something, I just get down to it and literally alter every note position and velocity...

Jennifer's a great singer, like a cross between Tori Amos and Amy Winehouse. So nice to hear. Good song too, agree with previous comments on the piano, needs more dynamics there.

Great singer and really good song.    Not sure if you fixed the piano sound in this mix currently posted but it seems a bit brittle yet.   That said, am a fan of NI's Alicia's Keys so typically baseline on that level of quality from a piano perspective;)  Never was a fan of True Pianos.      I would generally leave the piano panned to it's natural position in the stereo field, particularly when the piano is the main instrument under the vocal performance.   It seems you have the piano panned primarily to the left side.  Not a hard and fast rule but generally you will hear that layout on many Vocal/Piano songs as it has a more natural feel to it...

Nice overall arrangement and mix.   All these nits above are very minor as you have a real winner here as is.    I think you just need a better piano sample to take it over the top, along with some more dynamics in the MIDI piano performance.

I might also consider putting a more prominent solo cello under part of the string sections, panned right down the middle.   You have an awesome start here, you could call it a day with the current mix but it sounds like you want to take it up a notch..Definitely worthwhile endeavor to push it a little more.   Stellar performance.

Great vocal. I'd just drop the piano in level once she starts singing. Maybe put some cathedral reverb on it with a shorter tail than they usually have so it doesn't muck things up.

No one in the general listenership of our modern world will particularly care to find fault with the piano sample. Just a guess!

I hope she gets over her problems.  :)

cheers,
-Tom
