Similar experience here, except it wouldn't restore itself, just hung with those $%&££" revolving dots..

After several hours trying, managed to get it to revert to a previous version of windows.
 
An entire days work lost (not data, but I was able to do any work, and am insanely busy at the moment - teaching 6 days a week, as well as writing, gigging, studio work, etc.), and very stressful.
 
This all started at 8 a.m., and didn't get it running again until 2 a.m. - with one break for 4 hours of lessons.  Also wife not speaking to me now, as was a little bit angry.  So not all bad, I suppose.
 
I am seriously considering Macs, but realise that they are not perfect either, just thoroughly fed up with Microsoft..

Sometimes it's cool to be first in line, like with a new version of Sonar.  If you don't like it, you can easily roll back.
 
But being last in line with Microsoft might be OK now.  Microsoft has apparently adopted a new strategy about forcing these one size fits all upgrades onto all Windows users.  The problem is that they cannot test all possible PC configurations for full compatibility before release.  So it's become a crapshoot, and almost a universal beta test upon each new release.
 
I like Windows 10.  Except for the fact that they have removed, or have at least made more difficult, the option to pick and choose updates and upgrades.
 
If left in the default mode, W10 will check and download updates in the background.  Then when you reboot, it will attempt to apply them.   The W10 Pro version allows for more control over this behavior.
 
The easiest way to defer the downloading of updates that works for any version of W10 is for those using a WiFi connection only. 
 
If you set it to "Metered Connection" in settings, Windows will not download anything without approval, so it cannot automatically install updates until downloaded.  This option can be found in "Settings> Network & Internet> Wi-Fi > Advanced options.
 
I like having the option to update or upgrade when I am ready.  I hate surprises, especially with half-baked fixes, LOL.

finally the word is out on how long you can defer it - and it's only 4 months until M$ forces it upon you, and half of the time is up already.
 
now, are there still issues with 1607 as regards DAWs? what is to be aware of?
 
I have heard numerous reports that moded win 8.1 had to be reinstalled to get devices working again ... anything else?

take control . . . they can't force it on you, and you can 'defer' it for as long as you want. i shut down the updates on all my pc's at 1511 or whatever it was, the one before the original anniversary update, and it only takes a couple of mouse clicks, no registry hacking or other voodoo involved, and it works on home versions as well as pro etc.
 
right click start button - control panel - administrative tools - services - scroll down to windows update - right click and disable, you will not hear from windows update again until if and when you choose.
 
i know this may not be acceptable to those who think you need to keep windows up to date constantly, and a lot of posts in reply to problems here tell the op to ensure windows is completely up to date in an almost automatic knee jerk type of response, but i have never bothered with doing that under any windows version, mostly updating until a some random landmark, a major service pack update or something, eg sp3 for xp, sp1 for windows 7, and then not letting windows update again, been doing this since windows 95 and have never had any issues, have never had a problem which required keeping windows update current, or was solved by a windows update, so i definitely do not agree with the need to keep windows up to date . . . however your mileage may very, but that is my experience and i'm not changing anytime soon unless i find otherwise, but thus far it is not necessary.

I have had no issues apart from Windows re-enabling my on-board sound card. Had to go back into device manager to disable them again. I have had it for a while

It took me three times to get through the 1607 update. The first time, it made it a login point (black screen, spinning tiddler), and locked up. A power cycle caused a reversion to 1511. The second time, it got much further, but I had a bunch of weird errors and reverted. The third time, it seemed to hang at a login point again, but a power cycle caused it to complete. I had to reauthorize Addictive Drums and Keys, and reinstall the iLok Manager (I use PC authorizations only; no dongle), and install the latest nVidia drivers, but not much else. I also had to re-disable the internal soundcard and reset the iLok (PACE) service to Delayed Start. Oh, and I had to undo all of MS's forced default application resets.
 
From a DAW perspective, I seem to be running fine.

From what I hear, the 1607 update is more than a service pack type of update.  It actually runs a full upgrade of Windows under the hood, so some settings could be changed. YMMV.

You make a very good point, that should work. 
 
But I will add that if you never install security updates, it's recommended to stay disconnected from the net. Download any offline installers needed and scan any new files on another PC before loading them onto your DAW.
 
Another thing to consider now, is the development life-cycle for Sonar Platinum.  It seems that is very tightly wrapped with Windows API's & programming libraries.  With the rolling updates to Sonar, I would imagine that mainstream product testing would focus priority on the current version of Windows at the time of development.  Windows 10 has now become a rolling target as well.  Perhaps something else to consider is keeping these two in sync for code compatibility reasons?

are you 100% sure this still works like it did in win7 and 8? I may be losing my mind but I believe I had this disabled on one of my machines to find I enabled later when connecting the LAN cable again ... (and why all the fuss about the updates if all you need to do is shut down a service?)

i did that for a long time. always disconnected, only offline installs. it just doesn't work anymore with all these interlinked update packages and time required to manually download and install is just too long ... so I have switched to sporadic major updates (win10 plus all DAW software vendors in one go) with full backups before and offline in between ...
