  • CTRL+A doesn't select clips on tracks where automation is selected in the data picker

I have a funny feeling if I report this as a bug, it will be labeled "as intended". However, there's nothing intentional about pressing CTRL+A or doing a lasso select on the track view to clone a section of the song, and only have some clips selected for no other reason, than something I did days ago and couldn't possibly remember.

It's the same design flaw that comes up over and over and over again throughout Sonar. The user is expected to remember the state of the program that could be set days ago.

Is that in X3? I don't see that. Ctrl + A selects everything regardless of edit filter setting.

Yes it is. Try moving the selected clips afterward. Those whose tracks whose edit filters are not set to "Clips" won't move.

And while we're at it, I'd love to see how the user will get blamed for this one: Just trying to lasso-select the clips on the right using the right mouse button. Instead, all the clips get selected.

And if the answer is something to the tune of "there's an envelope somewhere in there, so the entire length of the envelope got selected", then I will lose my faith in humanity.

I'm not trying to blame anyone, merely pointing out that I don't see that behaviour. As you can see here

As for the second one I don't see all clips getting selected. Only the ones touched by the lasso. Am I mis-understanding something?

For the second issue, very often if you lasso-select a bunch of clips, or clips and folders, which include one or more on the very top 'row' (i.e. the uppermost track) then the selection marker in the time ruler will extend all the way back to measure 1:0:0

It's a really annoying 'feature' of the application that it does this.  Makes selection a PITA.  Cakewalk need to fix this issue IMO.

I bet you 50p that it you only lasso select clips up to 'row 2' then CTRL-select the final 'row 1' clips, this won't happen.

As for the first issue, if the edit filter isn't set to clips, then what's in the track view isn't clips, so I don't understand what you think you're trying to select..??  How do you think you can select clips on tracks that aren't set to show clips?

I can see the time range being selected beyond the lasso range, I can think of several reasons for that but the clips within that range aren't being selected which was the OP's complaint (I think)

The OP is referring to using Ctrl+A which does select everything (or does for me at least) and as the OP states should do. Using lasso or other selection methods will obey the edit filter.

Ah yeah, it's the clip on the top row.  I'm more familiar with the issue of the time range being beyond the range of the clips which are lasso-selected.  I note that it's a clip on the top row, which is always where the problems seem to occur in my experience.

I wonder if this is a genuine selection error, or just a graphical one?

I've not tried CTRL-A tbh (I very rarely have any cause to select everything in a project), but I do know that there's no way to select the clip using the mouse when the edit filter is e.g. set to notes.  Does CTRL-A select all clips and also all notes/automation nodes when used when multiple edit filters are set?  Are notes in a clip selected whose track is set to automation?  I'm confused as to how 'everything' can be selected.

Ctrl A does just that, selects everything. In X2 (I think) it was changed so that if the PRV is the active view and Ctrl+A is pressed it only selects all in that view. Previously it used to select everything in the project in the same way as it now works in the TV.

You're correct about the edit filter which is the whole point of it and for me very welcome. I was forever moving clips while trying to move nodes or envelopes.

I'll have to give it a try this evening... :-)
