Any Pro's really using VST 3 ? VST 2 are working great here ..planning on banning VSt3 that installed themselves (i usually do not install RTAS and VST3 when it's availlable)</p>

That's like telling Solomon with his 1000 wives that he's not allowed to gripe about women.

Now I'm not comparing plug-ins to women - though numerous potential and/or tasteless comparisons are easily available.
Nor am I saying I want 1000 wives - one is often more that I can deal with.
But you can run up a high plug-in count just exploring the freebies out there.
In the past people complaining about plug-in limits in these forums have often not been treated kindly - accused of being pirate or ne'er-do-wells.

Or...... someone who wants to be compatible with (nearly) any full project file handed to him/her?

how many plugins are doubled up though ? e.g. mono stereo and multi out versions (kontakt)

I could double the amount I have just simply by using the automap wrapper

+1 good point.
Especially if you work with outside projects or you're running a studio.

Right now, only UAD and Waves as far as I remember. Granted, as Danny says they are not needed but I find that my life is a lot easier if I don't have to remember after every update to delete the mono, and again for potential compatibility not getting into customizing my installs or menus (now in X3) I'm happy as a pig in poke.

With that said I do like the new X3 default plug menu. Groups them by type and yes I can now visually see how many compressors, EQs etc. (IOW overlap) I have.

I may create a custom plug list of my personal go to plugs but then again, that seems like I'm hiding from what I have and maybe I'll remember how a certain Pulteq EQ was better in a given situation (vendor A over vendor B) whereas if they were hidden I may not immediately recall that.

You may be confusing plugin layouts with the actual plugins on your system. Make sure that the plugin browser is showing the "Default - All Plug-Ins" layout. This is a common mistake when seeing fewer plugins. If you have a layout selected only the plugins contained in the layout will show.

Thanks for addressing this Noel. The Plugin browser is showing "Default - All Plug-ins" but definitely there are missing plugins so my question is that is there still a limitation of 255 (or a higher number) VSTs in X3? Or if there aren't any limitations, what could I possibly do to realize the limitless potential of VST plugins showing in X3?
