  • Feature request - export takes

I made the following point in a thread about take lanes in general in X3, but after more experience felt it deserves its own thread and a bit more detail so it does not get lost.

Now that take lanes are far improved, especially for multi miced instruments, there is a need to be able to easily export the audio of individual takes. A very common practice is for an engineer to track an album at one studio and then send wave files to a mix engineer at a different studio to import into whatever DAW he uses. Typically I will send along the three best takes of drums, bass etc., and the best 5-6 takes of solos and lead vocals so the mixer has some options to work with. I am tracking such an album now.

While X3 is great for tracking and auditoning multiple takes, exporting the audio from various takes is cumbersome, tedious, and prone to user error. This is because the only way to do it is to manually select one take to solo, export the track in the export audio dialogue, then go back and solo the next take and continue. With many tracks with multiple takes the time really adds up. I spent a lot of time yesterday doing this, and kept thinking " this should be much easier." In the earlier thread Ketih from Cakewalk chimed in and suggested an "export takes" option could be added to a future release. I truly hope this happens as the current system is a major workflow obstacle and it seems like a fairly simple programming change would fix this.

I did submit this as a feature request. I am happy to say I am optimistic it will be implemented soon (X3c?) as Cakewalk has been far more responsive following the release of X3 and seem to be more focused on listening to their customers. Hoping this very positive trend continues!

Not that I've tried, but what happens if you use the Flatten Takes command on each track and then export those?

Unless I am missing something I don't see how that helps me to quickly export all takes for a given set of tracks. If you have an idea how I can use flatten takes to help I would appreciate more details. Thanks.

Ohhh...    Yeah, ignore my last reply.   Nothing to see there.

What about selecting all takes, and just dragging them out to a folder? The caveats/limitations that come immediately to mind are few but possibly significant:

1. You won't get Track FX applied unless you freeze them first.
2. You'll want to make sure the clips are named appropriately.
3. One clip per lane, and all clips need to start at time zero to make alignment easy (slip-editing should help here).

Good idea.  I tried this. It works well for takes that start at the beginning of a song.  But if you have takes that are just parts of a song (e.g., a vocal chorus, or a solo) then each file is only the length of the the specific clip so it would be very difficult for a mix engineer to line everything up.  Also, the caveats you mentioned are substantial.  Still, for some takes this approach is useful as a workaround.

While various work arounds may exist, this does not IMHO negate the need for Cakewalk to update the Export Audio feature.  With X3's take lanes now far more useful, takes have in many ways become the new tracks.  We need the Export Audio feature, will all of its flexibility, available for takes to use Sonar effectively for professional collaboration.

What if you select.export all audio as Broadcast waves. They are.time.stamped.

Unless I am missing something I don't see how this helps export takes. Can you elaborate?

I absolutely agree this needs to be added to facilitate moving projects to different environments. Just make sure you enter a formal request because the Bakers don't necessarily see this stuff on the forum:

EDIT: Ah, I see from your OP you did this already. Good deal.

In fact I entered a formal request twice ;).  Glad you agree with the need for this feature.  I would therefore ask you to also submit a feature request.  I figure the more of us that request it the more likely it is they will address it.
