Ah.. the credentials in doing the X3 "upgrade"... I hadn't thought of that. Would installing an X2 demo.. and then activating it with his serial # etc work to get him X2 running ASAP and allow an X3 "upgrade" path? Or will the demo not allow a permanent installation?

I would in essence buy X2 in a boxed form locally HERE and give the info to my friend so he can register it.. and then download the X3 files for the upgrade. I would send him he box for the X2 version I purchased locally. It's a gift to him.. I'm just "expediting" the process so we can get started before so we don't have to wait till NEXT weekend to begin working on the project.. he'd have X3 this weekend already is my thinking.. I already have X3.. I don't need another copy. =)

If your friend registers the x2 you buy for him, he would be eligible for the upgrade option to X3 - which would mean he would have to provide credentials for the X3 download - not you.
Maybe the X3 option john points to would be your best option.

no - the demo is not upgradable to the full version.

To upgrade, the person registering the upgrade would have to have a cakewalk account with the previous version registered. Thats what entitles a.person to not only the upgrade but the discounted price, which is what an upgrade is about anyway.

I agree with the user using my avatar (I want it back, BTW).

Send him the "gift" so HE can register it. THEN he can upgrade it to X3.

Why not just buy him SONAR X3 at $99? If it's a gift and you aren't sharing registration, it's just a gift. The price of X2 and X3 should be the same now so don't see why you wouldn't just get him the latest.

So, buying an upgrade (from X2 to X3) for someone else, even if they never owned SONAR, is okay with you guys?  That is, if I, being an X2 owner, buys the X3 upgrade based on my copy of X2 and gives the X3 upgrade to someone is all right?

Thanks in advance.

I never said that Living Room Rocker. I said he should buy X2 full version and let the friend upgrade that. Or as Andrew suggested just buy the fellow X3 outright.

This is not that hard to figure out. What the OP should not do is use any upgrade path that is registered to him to give to his friend.

+100  Just buy it for him...http://www.musiciansfriend.com/pro-audio/cakewalk-sonar-x3 = $99.00 USD.  Completely reasonable, by any measure...

I was not referring to your post, John.  I was responding to Andrew's.  I agree about just buying X3 (basic) for just $99 (at any retailer or CW store).  But my question (to Andrew) is specifically about giving the "X3 upgrade" part to someone who does not already own X2.  So, I own X2 Pro., buy X3 Pro. for $149, and give it to a non-cakewalk customer (who doesn't have to pay $499 for it and neither do I).

Quite honestly, I am a bit insulted by your response to me, John.  I am not a nit wit and by you implying that 'the "upgrade path" not be used' is obvious in Andrew's post is by no means accurate.  I recall that the upgrade copy of a new SONAR version (say, X2 to X3) is not an upgrade copy/version per se but in fact a full copy of SONAR.  And, since I did not have to refer to an earlier version of SONAR when registering X3, I see no evidence of "sharing" any registration.  Only to know that if two persons were to install X3 using the same X3 registration info (not to be confused with the previously owned X2) that would be in violation to the user agreement (as Andrew expressly stated, "...and you aren't sharing registration..").

Now, before I end my post, please read through this response again, John, so that you are sure of the accuracy of what I have posted here.

Kind regards,
