You are saying you would give your copy of X3 that you got for $149 to a friend. That is what I call fraud. He has no right to have that copy. It is yours and yours alone. You are eligible for it only because you already have bought at some point a full version and have upgraded it from that first purchase. You can not give it away. Hence the upgrade path. 
 
I for one support the way CW has this system because it has kept our cost down and not required draconian copy protection. It is this trust that CW has shown to its users that I want to preserve. Maybe it doesn't matter to you but it does to me.  

Studio343.  I need some music.  Since you've already written some and are letting your friend use it, can I?  Maybe I'll make some money and be able to thank you.   How about your computer?  You ain't using 24/7.  Just leave your house open and I won't even bother you when I use it w/ your SONAR.  And your couch to crash on.  After all, you already paid for them.  Why should I give HP or SONY or Cakewalk money since you have already.  It would just be so much more convenient for me to use your stuff.
 
Now does your question about borrowing SONAR come into better focus?  You can use YOUR copy of SONAR on 2 computers.  If you "give' your numbers to a friend you are breaking the EULA and the whole reason for having two numbers is to stop exactly what you are doing.  Maybe Cake doesn't catch you if your friend never hooks up his computer to the internet.  But you could loose your right to use your copy or not be eligilbe for upgrades.  And stick the rest of us w/ dongles or a more severe form of copy protection to boot.  Thanks man.

I never said that Living Room Rocker. I said he should buy X2 full version and let the friend upgrade that. Or as Andrew suggested just buy the fellow X3 outright. 
 
This is not that hard to figure out. What the OP should not do is use any upgrade path that is registered to him to give to his friend. 

I was not referring to your post, John.  I was responding to Andrew's.  I agree about just buying X3 (basic) for just $99 (at any retailer or CW store).  But my question (to Andrew) is specifically about giving the "X3 upgrade" part to someone who does not already own X2.  So, I own X2 Pro., buy X3 Pro. for $149, and give it to a non-cakewalk customer (who doesn't have to pay $499 for it and neither do I).
 
Quite honestly, I am a bit insulted by your response to me, John.  I am not a nit wit and by you implying that 'the "upgrade path" not be used' is obvious in Andrew's post is by no means accurate.  I recall that the upgrade copy of a new SONAR version (say, X2 to X3) is not an upgrade copy/version per se but in fact a full copy of SONAR.  And, since I did not have to refer to an earlier version of SONAR when registering X3, I see no evidence of "sharing" any registration.  Only to know that if two persons were to install X3 using the same X3 registration info (not to be confused with the previously owned X2) that would be in violation to the user agreement (as Andrew expressly stated, "...and you aren't sharing registration.."). 
 
Now, before I end my post, please read through this response again, John, so that you are sure of the accuracy of what I have posted here.

To answer your question LRR, that would be not be allowed. The registration would belong to the owner and that can't be transferred as of today.

AGAIN, John, I was asking Andrew!  I just want clarification from a CW rep.  I am not intending to act this out.  Like I said, I already registered and installed my upgrade of X3.  I am not going to give it away.  Take a step back, dude.  You just can't help insulting others, can you.  (a rhetorical question...see, no question mark at the end of that last statement).

For clarification.. my intent was to get Sonar X3 into the hands of a colleague.. but a FULLY registered copy for HIM.. under HIS NAME, etc... My copy is MINE.. and isn't leaving my studio/computer ever. Maybe I wasn't clear.. I was just trying to expedite the project I'm working on and getting him the needed software ASAP.
 
In any case..  I bought him a gift certificate (online retailer) so he can purchase the version of X3 he prefers and download it today so we can get started....
 
We'll get to making some killer music now... If you guys thought i was implying something "fishy" I'm sorry. Never my intention. I was wanting to buy (CASH) Sonar locally to avoid an "online" purchase and since X3 isn't available locally here yet thought we could get him to "register" X2 (FOR HIM) and then be able to DOWNLOAD X3 from his Cakewalk account.. BUT I didn't realize there were "online retailers" who sold "download" copies of software like X3...  I was just trying to get my project started ASAP (and legally hence why I asked the question).
 
And NO "AT" you can NOT use my computer... or my music. Or drive my Benz. #justsaying

You need to stop thinking I am trying to insult you. You ask a question and I answered. I don't try to insult others. I simply express my point of view. You confuse the truth with insult. That is a tactic used by bullies. It wont work.

I know you are trying to do the right thing.  But content creators are in a sticky pace today, esp. software companies.  Along w/ musicians and production people who did make a living complaining how much tougher it is these days.  Even spotify etc. is cursed at by people who have seen their royalty checks shrink.  Because lots of poeple who should know better ... borrow ... software/content.  I don't think my daughters have ever bought a cd, much less a song and they know better.  I ask them how much music they could enjoy ain't being produced since there ain't no money in it.  But it is too easy. 
 
Since I'm a content provider, I get twitchy about it.  A lot of honest people don't see free downloading etc. as what it is - taking money directly from somebody else's pocket.  Glad to see you got it worked out.  Best of luck on the project.
