Yes, congas, bongos, cajon, shakers, that sort of thing. The kind of percussion that fills in the gaps without taking over.
I'm also a fan of the lowly tambourine; I use one in almost everything even though its presence is often not noticeable until pointed out. It can add a subtle dynamic lift to the chorus. I like to keep the tambourine hits sparse, e.g. doubling the snare on every 4th hit, but with a long reverb.
