Hi Annabelle, the best options to remove that noise are noise reduction plugins that do a noise capture (of "just noise" on the lead or tail end of a take) and then removal of that print from the entire track/clip. Only two come to mind offhand, which are Adobe Audition and iZotope RX. After going to a subscription model, Audition is not a good candidate (too unwieldy to get an older copy, and then the unknown if it will meet your needs).
However, iZotope has taken a lot of effort to make their plugins backwards compatible and are a much more user-friendly company. I just sent them an email request and linked this thread on your behalf in hopes that they can chime in here with a recommended solution for your needs.
ReaFIR (a free reduction tool included with
Reaper's Plugin Pack), is another option, but I am not sure if it is screen reader friendly.
