  • Midi Note "Zero" Durations -- Quantize and Length. [Feature Request]

Hi folks, I'm not sure where to submit a feature request so I'm going to post it here for consideration. If someone can let me know the proper place for submission I'd appreciate it.

My (and several other forum members) drum machine controllers is sending notes of "zero" duration into the PRV. They do indeed playback, but they show up so small on the PRV that it is really hard to edit them. Midi "quantize" of duration and Midi "Length" do not work on these notes to increase their value. You can go in and edit each note one at a time under the note properties, but this is a PITA for more than a few notes, a full drum track would take hours. We are not given a numerical value under Midi "Length" to adjust them to, only a percentage. (50% times zero is still zero, so no change)
Midi "quantize" of these notes to say a 1/16 note is just ignored and the duration remains zero.

Testing this is easy. Go into the PRV and place a few notes of any duration onto screen. Right click on these notes and set the duration as zero. Select them all and then try quantize duration and length on these notes, they will not change.

Customer service did show me a workaround, select the entire clip and zoom into one note, select the smart tool and pull out the length a little bit. Then quantize and length will work fine as the notes are now 1 or higher. (Thank you customer service.)

So can we please get these zero duration notes to be adjustable by Quantize and Length? Thanks

Forum member Beltrom was nice enough to point me to a CAL script that should address this issue as well (for anyone else having this problem) Please see the thread at http://forum.cakewalk.com/Note-duration-times-of-zero-when-recording-midi-with-a-drum-pad-Bug-youtube-video-m2900304.aspx

You can still use what used to be called Interpolate - I think it's now on the Edit > Replace screen.

Filter your notes so that only those with length of less than, say 30 ticks are selected and delete them all in one go.

Would that not work?

I don't want to delete them, as 1/3 to 1/2 of the notes I play with the controller (when laying down a groove) are reported as zero duration. These are not extra notes, but are kick and snare notes that I want to keep and use in the song.

Thank you Scook, I will send the feature request in now.

It's been submitted as a new feature request.

Bristol Jonesey's suggestion still basically works (I had a similar as first suggestion in the original thread I think (at least I think we mean the same selection - it used to be interpolate)).

Process menu => Find/Replace...
First screen selects what you want to change (so 0 or notes between 0 and 5 maybe), the second one how you want to change it (50, 10-50, 100-105 - pick your choice). Save a preset to avoid doing selections again.

This in no way invalidates your feature request of course.

Yes, beltrom is correct.

My suggestion will still work, but instead of deleting them, simply assign a new length, say 60 ticks for drum hits.

Excellent! I'll give that a try later tonight. Some of the other DAW's that I own do indeed work in the fashion I've requested. I've just become accustomed to that being part of my normal workflow.

In fact, you don't even have to go to this trouble.

Just go into the PRV, sweep your mouse cursor down through the virtual keyboard at the left of the screen so that ALL notes are selected, then just change them en masse in the event inspector.

This obviously wouldn't work for any sort of keyboard performance, but for drums it's ideal, as it doesn't matter how long the individual drums hit are
