There's a petition on the NI forum to restore key colors. Hopefully, the blowback will convince them to make the new scheme optional.

Just gone an added my four penneth!

Yes, this is truly a dumb move. It looks like I won't be upgrading until I'm forced to because a new library that I want needs the new version number.

I believe we have found the correct answer!

I consider the NI Service Center the worst of all the registration/authorization go'rounds I have ever dealt with, from all the companies out there. What is the "new content" that makes this worthwhile? Does Kontakt have a new factory library or something?

sorry to be Debbie Downer.

I always update.  Here's why...

If you don't stay current, you get "stuck in a rut", and by that
I mean that if you are trying to "hold on" to the old then you're
not learning and adapting to an ever changing scenario, and will,
eventually , HAVE TO make the change, AND, because of being "behind",
NOW that learning curve has become much steeper, as you now have to
play catchup "all at once" rather then "rolling with the changes bit by bit".
Yes, you are taking a "risk", but that also contributes to the "learning and
adapting process" until it gets sorted...

I'd rather do a "little bit" here and there, then a WHOLE LOT later...

That's just my philosophy....YMMV

I tend to agree with that,  it's also a habit picked up from my day job (before I retired). A lot of software we used was only supported on the current version so keeping up to date was important.

I always update.  Here's why...

I'm an early adopter for most new applications and versions of things. The reason being that new versions can bring new technology and features that make it more cutting edge and give an advantage to someone who takes the risk of using it from the start.

This is the first time in a long time I've rolled back on an application. NI basically took all the input they've been given over the years and did the exact opposite. Disappointing.

I would prefer the old key colouring and possibly would have preferred to keep the quickload icon as it was. But all in all I think the faster loading is worth the drawbacks. On my machine there's a huge difference for some libraries, no idea how they did that. I did vote on the NI forum poll to get old key colouring back though.

On the updating thing. I tend to wait for people more brave or in need of an update to find any errors, so I guess I normally have a short latency. For instance I haven't been on any of the Sonar early releases. But I stay more or less up to date if there's not any particular reason to stay away.

Well so far not one post here or on the petition thread on support of the new key colouring. Not a single accusation of Ludditeism, that says lot.

CCLarry, you and others must be users of Kontakt far above my rudimentary level. I guess if you are editing an instrument's script or creating a new instrument, then maybe the upgrade gives you power users more exciting functionality.

I really just open up a library and off we go. For me Kontakt is a glorified VST wrapper. So that gives me little reason to upgrade until I need to because I see a new cool library that needs it. I'm pretty limited that way I'm afraid.

But didn't they say there was new factory library content? Isn't there a new bouzouki-gamelan hybrid or something?
:)

thanks,

5.6 obviously has issues as well as changes. You can browse the NI Kontakt forums to see some of them and NI seems to be keeping quiet about them.

They apparently added some cool stuff to this update but they've taken some stuff away that people relied on. The key switch color change and the removal of the sample purge button is enough to make me wait.

At my age, I don't get in a hurry to install the latest and greatest any more, especially if people are reporting issues and the devs are not responding. Hopefully, this will get an update that will be an acceptable compromise to please all of us.

I can't speculate on why they removed the sample Purge button but I have this feeling the removal of the key switch color placement was by plan for future use. (Anyone interested in Piano lessons by NI?, the notes light up on the virtual keyboard to make even a Beginner sound like a Pro overnight... marketing)

I'll wait.
