I'm struggling with trying to give 20GB of Wavs recorded for a friend to her. I was going to try to put it on a single DVD. For this reason I exported it as FLAC.

In the past, if I choose 8 bit pulse code modulation, when I listen to the flac in Media Monkey it's hissy.

So... is this like a second pass at sample rate? You choose it first in the regular export dialog and again when exporting FLAC?

So I exported the files as Signed 24 bit PCM and the files are as big as the original wav files.

What am I missing?

Ok... maybe if I ask a different question...

Is it possible that wav files on Windows 8 are now equivalently compressed to FLAC files?

I always thought that FLACs were compressed as compared to WAV.

I'm now of the opinion that exporting as FLAC and choosing 8 bit PCM or 16 bit PCM actually reduces the bit depth of the file from the assigned bit depth on the export screen.

Further, the exported FLAC files seem to be equal or larger in size when compared with identically exported WAV files.

Then, using 7-Zip to compress, gets a smaller ultimately compressed 7-Zip package using the WAVs than using the FLACs.

Why is this?

WAV must now be somewhat compressed PCM?

When using 7-ZIP on 20 GB of exported WAV files, I'm able to squeeze them to 67% of their 20GB size.

Fog
flac is loseless compression.. IRC some of the DP instruments use it.. so the quality isn't affected.. just the size.
you might wanna look at some of the dbPoweramp tools like DMC, that'll do batch conversion..
there is something like LameDrop, but it's called FlacDrop, but you need to use the encoder also
