In the 1960s, some mono records were coverted to fake stereo—that is, to a two-channel recording that had a slightly different left and right image—by using some kind of comb filtering.

Does anyone know of a relatively simple way to create a 1960s-like fake stereo version of a track in Sonar?  I supposed I could use a large array of EQs with complementary notches on the right and left, but that seems overly complicated and might now sound the same.

Thanks.

Nugen audio has tools for doing this and they work very well. Some are now 64 bit too.

I use to use a plugin called Qsound that would turn mono into a very wide stereo image.  It doesn't work with later versions of windows though so I can't use it any longer.  It seems the company no longer sells the plug-in, but now only a proprietary technology to audio device manufacturers for on the fly simulation.  Here is an article about it and similar software:

Change the interleave on your mono track to stereo and then try using the Channel Tools plugin.  I'm not sure if this will achieve the desired results but it might be worth a look.

I haven't tried, but wouldn't the new included stereo image tool in X3 Producer and Studio do the trick?

There are some interesting 'stereo effect' mixing tricks that Craig Anderton uses in his Sonar Workshop videos.  Mostly on mono guitar tracks but they could be applied to other sounds/instruments.

Thanks, guys.  I actually wanted to do this as a retro effect rather than as a solution to a problem.  On an upcoming album, I have a couple of songs I thought would sound cool either with fake stereo, or else with that bizarre kind of early panning that puts drums on one side, bass on ther other, etc.

Appreciate all the thoughts above.

You can also use the parallel processing in TH2.
