I'm thinking of upgrading to Sonar 7, but the only reason for doing it would be the ability to quantize my audio bass tracks to my midi drum tracks. How easy is it to do that? I've been reading posts on Audio Snap and it doesn't look very easy, in fact, it might be easier just to re-record the bass tracks. I would like to do a 50% quantize the way I do on my midi tracks, but on the audio bass track. Anyone?

If your only reason is to get audio quantize and you dont want to learn how to use the audio snap program, then dont bother and re record your bass. It best to not fix stuff in the mix and get it right durring tracking anyways..

Totally agree . You'll get better/faster results by re-recording the Bass parts.

I mean really now, how much are we going to allow software to 'fix' our music for us. The whole idea of quantizing audio feels like cheating. I think audio snap is a great tool for editing and remixing and maybe even spot corrections but if you need to "quantize" the entire performance, then you'll probably benefit from just re-recording it.

The complexity of AudioSnap is directly proportional to the complexity of the audio. For a simple bass part, AudioSnap is pretty simple. AudioSnap combines several different functions with a lot of flexibility, which can make it seem complex, but each individual function is pretty straightforward. I think quantizing is one of the easier functions to get a handle on. Timing extraction and tempo map changes are where it gets interesting.

+1 for recording the part right in the first place.

some things are going to be hard to do, thats just life. Since the DAW's have come into existance, recoridng has been so much easier to do and edit. how much easier do you really want it to be. I think its easy enough as it is. you need to work hard to produce and record a song, that will never change

Sorry to resurrect this old thread but I was researching after posting about this topic re the new X3 being released and I think most of you are pretty much off the mark on your answers to the OP.  He's not asking how to become a better player.  He's asking if a mature program like Sonar can do something as bonehead simple nowadays as quantize audio.  I also bet that if most of you offering the "play it better" advice had your own playing analyzed for true tempo/feel correctness you might be quite surprised at just how off you were.  No matter.  My beef...and I'm a...wait for it...honest professional player...is that Sonar pretty much bites at audio quantization compared to the rest of what's out there now and I'll be pretty sad if my new copy of X3 that I just ordered isn't vastly improved in this area.  As, apparently will Don. YMMV.
 

Ha ha, I was chuckling as I looked at the date and then the remark about if future Sonars would get better at this feature, then our ol 'pal chips in chuckling too! 
Don't get your hopes up.
But we must face the facts that a LOT of Sonar users are not great musicians and that's WHY the purchase the latest and greatest software hoping that it will hide this glaring fact. Hey, I could never dream of typing up a document anyone could read without my trusty word processor. Guilty as charged,, But I can play my instruments well enough that I don't need or use a lot of the features Sonar offers. I prefer to play the part until it is as good as I can get it and then that's the end of it. To me it will sound like me and not a like a computer made it.  It's all a matter of personal satisfaction right!  
We all enjoy the hobby in our own ways. 
I enjoy the challenge of playing parts. Others enjoy editing. Some need the tools to polish the ol'turd, Some dream of a button that you push that makes a song they had in there head without them having a clue how to do it the old fashioned way. It's all good.

If your (Sonar) going to brag and boast about what "this version" of your new DAW can do, "back that Sh*t up"!
 
Don't get me wrong, I also try to improve my playing to a point where recording my performance is just that, "recording my performance". Not editing, readjusting, adding to, removing, moving, adjusting.....  none of that! I want to play and record! So just in case you come hear me play that song in a live performance it sounds as close to the recorded performance as possible.
Now I'm not talking about "mixing", "mastering", or anything the things that prepare a recording to be radio ready, I'm just referring to the actual performance.
But back to the DAW. If you are going to advertise a piece of software to be the "latest and greatest", you gotta back that sh*t up, kid!
